Coffee Talk #137: What Do You Hate About Modern Games?

Yesterday I asked you about classic gaming features you miss. Today I want to know what modern gaming features you loathe. Games aren’t automatically more fun just because technology is more advanced and development techinques have improved. Sometimes there are trends that decrease the fun level. So get into your bitter barn and think about the things you hate in today’s games.

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, Bryan Danielson winning a match before E3, the lost Lost script, or your favorite Poison song, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

As for me, I hate that consoles have to be online for some content to be accessed. It absolutely sucks that certain bits of DLC need to be verified through the Internet. If you’re Internet service is out or your playing your console on the road without a connection, there’s a good chance that you can’t play everything you’ve purchased. I understand why the online check happens, but there has to be a better way, no?

Now it’s your turn! What are the trends in gaming that irk you? Tacked on cooperative play? Day one DLC? I want to know!

  1. I'm beginning to hate cut scenes. It seems there are more and more cut scenes than gameplay now.

    @WWE NXT

    I think he will. WWE has a poll right now about what rookie is impressing you so far. I voted for Bryan. you should too.

    There's a lost "Lost" script???? I need to google that.

    @Poison Song

    It's funny that you mention them i was watching Hot tub time machine and they were in it. well their band was shown i'm not sure if it was all of them but "Nothing but a good time" is a good one. I think it was used on a WWE PPV theme song once.

  2. Wow I bitch a lot but this is going to take some thinking. (whats thinking?)

    someone mentioned it yesterday but a lack of local co-op has really hurt gaming lately, imo. My girlfriend likes to play every now and then but we only get to play a select few games at the house together. it's a shame really. I don't mind online co-op as an option but to have online co-op and ignore local is just lazy if you ask me. (although i'm sure most of it has to do with sales #s)

    I have many fond memories of playing split screen games with friends throughout my childhood and many of my favorite games included local multiplayer, such as goldeneye and Halo and it's a shame to see most of that lost in today's market.

    To me online play is a well enough form of multiplayer but it never replaced local parties for me. there's a disconnection between online play and local play that you can't replicate online, even when I'm playing with friends online it isn't the same. I want to reach over and punch my friend in the arm for a cheap shot, or laugh out loud with the whole group because of an awesome shot. you just can't get that online. RANT=OFF

  4. I liken local multiplayer to watching movies – I love to watch movies by myself, I get a great kick out of it. But watching a movie with a friend can be more than just a movie, it can be memorable

    I couldn't agree more. Left for dead made it so only 2 people can play on one screen. I find that really annoying too.

  6. I hate persistent online ranking and closed game lobbies. I would say that games have improved in that regard, but Halo still supports one of those and every game with tacked on multiplayer seems to favor both.

    @ Halo

    Speaking of…..

    I enjoyed the hell out of active camo and assassinations last night. The only to things Reach needs to improve on are their closed lobbies and non customizable loadout. I understand they don't want every one to spawn with rocket launchers, but they could at least let us choose between AR and DMR for each class as a spawn weapon. Maybe even throw in Covenant variants as well.

  7. @Shockwave

    Is it just me or is local co-op not good for HDTVs? When I tried to play COD4 co-op with my son on my HDTV all it did was give me a major headache and extreme motion sickness. It didn't bother me back in the day on my SDTV.

  8. @RROD – good point, I haven't been able to play as much local co-op as you know, but I'll have to keep that in mind. I usually sit pretty close to the tv for local

  9. The desire for local co-op is interesting. With the rise of online gaming, playing has become less social in terms of being face-to-face with friends. I miss that, but I prefer having a full screen all to myself.

  10. I miss games on current systems that are fun to play in groups. Mario kart is a fun game for pretty much anyone to play. Halo is not exactly everyone's cup of tea though, and I don't know many games that have such broad appeal like Mario kart 64 had or Mario party, goldeneye, etc. You could say those things are on the Wii, but personally I hate the Mario kart or Mario party games on Wii. I want those games on 360 or PS3.

    Interesting topic or you could just give me your opinion. Today in auditing class a friend and I were discussing SCC. He asked how long it took me to beat it and I told him between 12-14 hours. He said that was too short for him to blow $60 on. I disagreed saying the game was worth it because it was very fun.

    Then I realized something….this guy doesn't work. So perhaps a game like that is only good for about 2-3 days for him. What say you? For me anything that length is worth my money since I work and go to school…but even if I only worked or only went to school I'd have fun with a 12 hour game. No biggie.

  12. I also have to agree with smartguy, I despise DRM. It really hit me hardest when I couldn't play some of my XBL games when my internet wasn't working. I don't want to have to tie myself down like that just to play a game that I already paid for.

    I also would like some games to have split screen co-op, but that also goes along with my other post about wanting more games that were four person friendly on a console like my 360. I like to play online, and I know that devs are probably "encouraged" to have online multi-player anymore so that it can drive up things like XBL gold memberships, but just like with DRM- if I am not hooked up to the internet I still like to have the multi-player option. Or maybe I'm just wasting my time looking for the modern day equivalent to Mario Kart 64, Mario Party 2 (I think it was the best one), or Goldeneye.

  13. I made my own local MP in Bad Company 2 this last weekend. I took my PS3 to a friends house and hooked it up via the RGB cables (his was HDMI, allowed 1 Digital and 1 Analog for PiP) and we did “split screen” with 2 consoles on his 55″ TV. Both got online and got in the same game. Worked out pretty well.
