Coffee Talk #135: Do Villains Make the Hero?

Post image of Coffee Talk #135: Do Villains Make the Hero?

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, being jealous of RPadholic smartguy’s HTC Incredible, the chances of Mark Cuban holding an NBA championship tropy, or why you think Shane Mosley will beat Floyd Mayweather, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

My friend and I were having a nerd lunch yesterday, talking about Iron Man’s crappy rogues gallery. It was extra funny because we were eating at a restaurant made famous by Swingers and there were a few minor celebrities around. As Hollywood did its thing, we wondered if Iron Man’s popularity wasn’t as high as it could have been due to his extraordinarily bad villains. Crimson Dynamo?!? The Mandarin?!? Fin Fang Foom?!?

Every hero needs a good villain to fight. Batman probably has the best assortment of baddies, which is one reason he’s globally popular. The X-Men have to deal with Magneto’s brand of mutant justice and a large portion of the world hating/fearing them. Heroes like The Flash and Daredevil have been elevated in popularity thanks to their villains. Heck, Flash’s adversaries call themselves “The Rogues”, while DD has edgy opponents like Bullseye, Elektra, and Kingpin.

Do you think villains make the hero? Does a comic-book protagonist need top-shelf baddies? Or can the hero win the hearts and minds of the public regardless of who he/she is fighting?

Hell yes villains make the hero and vice versa!!!

With no bad guys/girls the Hero is just a pompous jerk with a chip on his/her shoulder because there is no one to keep their egos in check. (Now switch the word hero with bad guys/girls).

That makes a lot of sense, I have always been more of a spider-man fan because I have always felt that his character is very relatable. Batman is not one of the superheros I really care for, but I do love the villains, and that is more what has attracted me to the movies. In all honesty I don’t really think I have ever cared for any of the batman movies on the basis of batman himself, but by the villains he faced. Which really does make me think that the villain plays a vital role in bringing up the hero.

But I think background is also extremely important. I like spider-man because of his background. Likewise Superman and Batman have good background stories (in my opinion) or at least interesting myths and such. I have never felt like Iron Man had that. I feel like the Iron Man movie was mostly action with a pretty lame plot, actually. And I enjoyed it well enough, but Iron Man in general never seemed as prestigious as the others I mentioned and my theory is that it comes down to the background of the character.

She had a Giant pig that ate everything. Instant win?? I think so.

@bsukenyan Iron Man’s origin is more interesting than his villains, imo.

I think you hit the point on why i don’t like many of Marvel’s characters. Iron Man has to have some help when it comes to selling his story, i.e. The Avengers and also the past Civil War and Siege series. The same thing goes for the Fantastic 4, Hulk, and Thor. They need some re-tooling like Geoff Johns and Co., have just done with Green Lantern and Flash. I think Iron Man does better in movies than comics it also helps that RDJ is doing an awesome job as Tony Stark.

I would give you a reason that Sugar Shane would be Money but i really don’t want either of them to win but i really don’t want Floyd to win, either. what a conundrum (sp?)

Mark Cuban’s chances of holding an NBA Championship depends on how much he pays someone one but of his team actually winning one, idk maybe like 30 to 1. They’re getting up there with age and Dirk seemed pretty iffy on whether he will stay or opt out.

If I had super powers I would trick everyone in to thinking I was the hero, when in reality I was also the villain. Once I was through terrorizing the public and knocking over banks I would fake the villains death… ya, I thought about that a lot as a kid.

DC and Marvel need to make a Bruce Wane and Tony Stark movie. I think the current cast for those two roles could make one funny movie.

@tokz_21 I just want to see David Stern hand Cuban the trophy. That would be such a magical moment.

I’ll be posting thought on Mayweather/Mosley later today.

@tokz_21 I’d love to see him kiss Stern and say, “Thanks daddy!”. I’d love to watch Stern pretend to smile while Cuban celebrated.

It does seem like that from some things that I have read or seen before (admittedly I don’t do tons of reading on any of these subjects). But just because Iron Man’s origins are more interesting than his villain’s origins does not mean he is actually interesting by default.

@rpad ha! i could imagine that or him having an expletive tirade, like ” I won b*tch*s! It’s mine! F**k you all I’m great! My team is great!” Then he would snatch it from Stern and run around oh and throw a chair somewhere.

I’m just trying to find exceptions to the rule. I was gonna mention that Captain America is pretty weak yet very recognizable… but then I remembered Red Skull.

Who did the Hulk really go against?

Does this rule spread across all fiction?

@bsukenyan Sounds good, but not as evil as the cheesecake version.

@tokz_21 That would be cool if he gave Stern the Stone Cold Stunner after accepting the trophy.

@N8R Captain America actually came up in the conversation. After Red Skull it really drops off. Arnim Zola?!?

@rpad haha! Also J.R. has to be there yelling, “STUNNER, STUNNER! OH MY GOD!”
also i take you didn’t read the Civil War series huh, that series made me like Captain America more.

@n8r
for Hulk you just have the Abomination (sp?) after that who knows. I’m not much of a Hulk fan. I think that’s why they piled him, Iron Man, Thor, Capt. America into the Avengers so they would have reasons to fight and have tie-in series to each of their serials.

In the interest of conversation, Wolverine did first appear in the Hulk comics… but I’m not sure if that counts.

Very true… but Red Skull was pretty damn awesome.

@tokz_21 Of course I read Civil War! That actually adds to the point. The most interesting enemies Captain American and Iron Man ever had were each other.

I didn’t want to bring that point up, unless you read it. or if anyone else didn’t read it, that series was brilliantly written and made me like Capt America more.

If I use the amazon links to buy anything does the purchase have to be new or can it be used? Probably sounds like a stupid question, but you never know what kind of little stipulations businesses have about stuff.

@bsukenyan New or used doesn’t matter. It just depends on who the seller is. Thanks for thinking of using my links though!
