Coffee Talk #133: KFC Double Down vs. IHOP Pancake Stackers

For the last couple of weeks, I’ve been fascinated with the KFC Double Down — cheese and bacon sandwiched by two slabs of boneless fried chicken. It is one of the most ridiculous fast food concoctions I’ve ever seen in my life. Ergo, I need to have one…but I’m more than a little scared of it. I’m not really sure why. After all, I did eat a double Big Mac (four all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, on a sesame-seed bun) in Thailand, simply because of how preposterous it looked. For some reason, I chicked out (*snicker*) of the Double Down the last few times I passed my local KFC. It’s an intimidating sandwich.

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, the first round of the NBA playoffs, the WWE draft results, or Manny Pacquiao’s campaign, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

Yesterday a friend showed me IHOP’s Pancake Stackers. The press release says it features “sweet and silky crustless cheesecake layered between two world-famous IHOP buttermilk pancakes, crowned with a choice of cool strawberries, blueberry or cinnamon apple compote and crowned with creamy whipped topping”. Wow. A cheesecake sandwich that uses pancakes as the bread?!? And I thought the Double Down was ridiculous…. Still, I will eventually have one of these too.

Here are my questions for you today. What the hell is going on with food in America?!? Who would win in a fight? The KFC Double Down or IHOP’s Pancake Stackers? Have you tried either of these combos yet? Are you planning to? Or are they too extreme for you?

  1. I don't eat fastfood so I will await your review sir. Goodluck on that cheesecake sandwich.

  2. @Ray

    My dad and I have a restaurant in North Texas, that means if it isn't fried or covered in gravy they won't eat it. Recently as a special we added what we call The Bacon Ultimate Fatty Melt. It is 8oz hand pressed beef patty, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, mayo or mustard, cheese and 6 strips of bacon. And then buns are replaced by 2 grilled cheese sandwiches. We sell them like crazy.

    I haven't tried the KFC thing either, mostly because our local KFC always gets Fs on their health inspections. And I never eat at IHOP because I hate restaurants that use institutional pack food.

  3. I was planning on trying the double down just once. I tried the baconator from Wendy's once after that i realized that was too much burger for me. I love breakfast though and now i am for sure going to look for these pancake stackers at IHOP. If there was a meal where you can pretty much eat whatever you want it's in breakfast, i.e. steak & eggs, eggs benedict on a pizza etc..

    @pacquiao

    I haven't kept up with his campaign, i figured i would get updates on this from you rpad.

    @WWE draft

    i'm disappointed that not enough people change during the RAW show and then they announce a "supplemental" draft and it's only 3 additional ones. They should have another draft on Smackdown to mimic the NFL draft, you know Day 1 and Day 2. This draft gimmick is losing it's luster for me.

  4. Wait, cheesecake and pancakes……….. I will have to remember to try that next time I go to IHOP. Double Down has to much meat for me to eat. I can't eat that much pure meat without something green to help digest it.

  5. @SlickyFats Where's your restaurant? I might have to make a trip for your sandwich. It sounds insane!

    @tokz_21 I've been getting updates from a few friends in the Philippines, but nothing interesting has happened with Pacquiao's campaign yet.

    The supplemental draft had 11 picks. You sure you didn't miss those?

    The Double Down would almost certainly be an F&L for me: first and last.

    I see…. When i went to WWE site yesterday at 11a Ct since it was scheduled to be at 12n ET and it gives a link to get "live" coverage but when i clicked the link it only showed the 3 i mentioned yesterday. Also, all the wording in the description led me to believe it was over. I went back to check it out later at 3p CT and it was still the same 3. Irreagardless, i still think they should have those done in Smackdown.

    As for Pacquiao's campaign, well your probably the only one I can think of that would follow him and provide updates, i don't think the boxing sites would provide that information.

  7. @Slicky

    Done.

    Your sandwich sounds like something else I have seen…except they put a meatloaf in between two meat lover's digiorno pizzas and added bacon. Interesting.

  8. It depends. If you suffer from high blood pressure, stay away from KFC. If diabetes is your crutch, IHOP is a no go.

    Personally, I feel the heartburn looking at pictures of the Double Down.

    @ Slicky

    Totally voted.

  9. I have had the Double Down 3 times. 2 times the fried version and 1 time the grilled. The Grilled is tastier but the cheese and sauce slide off and leave a pool of goo at the bottom of the paper wrapping. The fried is amazing and I want one now.

  10. @Ray

    We are an hour north of Dallas so DFW is closest. Its 80 miles from the airport to Sherman/Denison.

    Also I just went and got a KFC Double Down. It is a sodium nightmare. 1500mg. All i taste now is salt. It was tiny also. Tasted like chicken with cheese and bacon. Extremely greasy.

  11. voted for you slicky, although north texas isn't far from denver, I might need to validate my "like it" some time. That sure sounds like a texas hamburger to me.

    the double down just sounds rediculous. Generally I avoid fast food as a rule, I doubt I'll ever get to try one of those bad boys out.

    I don't really like ihop either but that it pretty crazy too. sometimes you don't have to wonder why most of the population will be overweight and have diabetes in the next few decades

  12. Thanks everyone for voting. We just made it to the top 100 restaurant in Texas on Urbanspoon, so I hope these votes help us move up. The Top 2 in Texas are from Sherman/Denison area (where we are).

  13. Hey for real if anyone of y'all wants to come this way or is passing through, stop by and its on me. Because that would just be awesome.

  14. @tokz

    I know right. And literally it is my pop in there cooking every single order that comes out of the kitchen.

  15. @slicky fats

    Wow! I'm going to have to stop by some time and visit.

    I'm on my way to the see the Cubs game!

  16. @ Slicky;

    Done. I'll stop by next time in the area.

    @ Tokz;

    Prepare to be disappointed… again.

    @ Topic;

    KFC Famous Bowl FTW! Where else can you go to a fast food place and literally get everything they sell into one bowl? Patton Oswalt did a comedy bit on this:

    -M

  17. @RRODisHere That's an excellent question. Out of curiosity, who's your favorite tag team of all time? I'm leaning towards the Rock 'n Roll Express. Ricky Morton was awesome at selling and making the hot tag.

  18. @ Favorite Tag Team

    Tough question…

    I really liked the Killer Bees when I was a kid. I was also a huge mark for The Road Warriors and Demolition. But honestly… The Mega Powers kicked ass.

  19. How can you not go with E & C! Now for the benefit of those with flash photography i will unveil my 3 sec pose of my reaction to the cubs game.

    :(

  20. @rrod

    i dont know why the wwe hates tag teams but i think they mightve found the right team to give the titles team. A true tag team the hart dynasty. They have that something that reminds me of old tag teams. You know two up and comers not good on their own yet but could be with more polishing. They have some kind of gimmick and they have a tag team finisher move, something lacking since the dudleys i think. The non hart related guy needs to lose the sharpshooter after that finisher though, i feel it dimishes the finsher

  21. @Raymond Padilla

    The Road Warriors. They looked so intimidating coming to the ring with those spikes and the Dooms Day Device was the best tag team finisher of all time.

    @tokz

    Enjoy the Hart Dynasty while you can. The WWE will break them up soon enough just like they did with Cryme Tyme.

  22. @RRODisHere I loved The Road Warriors in the AWA and NWA. They were the most intimidating wrestlers for years. Then WWF softened them up and renamed them The Legion of Doom. They weren’t the same after the red shoulder pads.
