Coffee Talk #128: Predicting the Rest of This Gen’s Console Wars

In preparation for my interview with EEDAR Jesse Divnich, I wanted you ladies and gents to play analyst for a second. This console generation is roughly halfway over, depending on how long you believe this gen will last. The Nintendo Wii has slaughtered the competition. The Xbox 360 has done very well. The PlayStation 3 had been picking up steam since August 2009. How do you think the rest of this generation will play out?

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, Big Ben’s suspension, Crystal Bowersox almost quitting American Idol, or RIM being stuck in 2002, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

Reminder: please submit your questions for EEDAR’s Jesse Divnich here. He’s cool, smart, and awesome. You should ask him some questions.

Will Nintendo be able to sustain its ridiculous momentum? If not, will it still be able to edge out the others? Will Natal give Xbox 360 a boost in the casual market? Will the PlayStation 3 be able to do the same with PS Move? Do you think Sony can catch Microsoft?

Let your opinions fly (please) and predict the rest of this generation’s console wars!

  1. I think Natal will do better than Move because the buy in is at a lower price point. If you've got a family of 4, those move controllers will really add up on the wallet.

  2. To start, Sony will catch up to the 360's sells, but it will be posthumously. Sony will sell the PS3 long after the 360 has been discontinued and catch up in the long run. Nintendo is looking like it will releasing a handheld about a year ahead of schedule, which might indicate an intuitive to be first this gen. By first, I mean 2011-2012. This will force Microsoft and Sony's hand if they have not already made plans for those years. Everyone keeps saying this gen is different and will last longer, but that is said every gen. I've got other indicators that support this, but I don't want to say all of them at once. Bad debate tactic.

  3. @Sandrock323 How is Nintendo a year ahead of schedule? The DS was released in 2004. The GBA was released in 2001.

    @thundercracker The cracked me up. Ha! The good old days.

  4. Adam Schefter of ESPN tweets that they are looking to trade Roethlisberger for a top 10 pick in tomorrow night's NFL draft. Add in a 4 – 6 game suspension, Big Ben thinking he shouldn't have been thinking with lil Ben.

    @ Topic

    The Wii will stay ahead of all the consoles only because there are way more casual than hardcore players. XBOX LIVE SAVED/IS SAVING the Xbox. Sony needs a better marketing team for the PS3. At the end of the day Nintendo will have the biggest profit. The Xbox has the best line up of games due to multiplatforming. In my eyes the PS3 is like the original Xbox, we all know that its a more powerful machine but the the few exclusive games just don't cut it for the masses.

  5. @Ray

    Wow I forgot when the GBA was released. I was thinking though, that they released the DS a year before the Wii and that they would keep those products in that kind of fashion. The handheld, the guaranteed sell, will build momentum for the console, traditionally not the guaranteed sell. You are right though, if anything the 3DS is late. I'm going to dig a little more on some other things before I post them. Dates are not my strong point.

  6. @ Sandrock

    -"Dates are not my strong point."-

    That's because you hand out on nerdy websites talking about geek stuff. (jk)

    @ Big Blak

    I say it won't happen… but honestly, I can see positive things if he does get traded. On thing is for sure, I'd rather shift the heat I've been getting to Thundercracker. Then I can repeat some of his quotes right back at him.

    @ topic

    At this point… I really don't care. I just want to play games… is that so wrong?

  7. @n8r

    im not holding you in any way accountable for having a rapist for a qb, im just joshin

  8. @thundercracker Yes, for a few months now. Thanks for asking. Some days the knee is a little stiff and painful. I still get nervous walking in the rain. Most days the knee is anywhere from 70 to 80 percent.

  9. @ Lost

    Wow… big things happened.

    Island prime:

    Smokey revealed that he was Christian Sheppard and indeed led Jack to the caves in Season 1 because they needed water.

    Smokey sent Sayid to kill Desmond. Whether or not he did, we still don't know.

    Sawyer switched the plan on Smokey and and Claire is apparently along (for now). Jack started working with Sawyer, but jumped off the boat only to be seemingly recruited by Smokey.

    If I missed anything, someone pleas fill in the gaps.

    Flash sideways:

    Ben rushed Locke to the hospital after Desmond ran him over

    Sayid and Kate both got arrested by Sawyer and Miles.

    Jack and Claire met up and found out they were brother and sister.

    Jack got called in for surgery… and it was on Locke.

    That's what I can remember off the top of my head.

  10. @ Thundercracker

    Oh… how the winds change. Tomorrow (when he doesn't get traded) it will be all N8R's fault that Ben can't be gay like Kordell Stewart was.

  11. @Lost add in

    in island prime

    Sawyer and the others go to Widmore's camp. We have a Sun & Jin reunion only to be cut off as they get double crossed by Widmore and are about to be killed.

    @n8r

    it looks like my theory was right! Only thing it doesn't explain is Walt. Why did Walt appear to Shannon when he wasn't dead, like the others.

  12. @ tokz

    Walt is special… he also appeared to Locke when Locke was in the pit after Ben shot him.

    I think Walt is gonna be a big deal in the finale.

  13. My DirectX link is looking good. I want to say DirectX11 is an indicator, but there is no previous evidence to support it. That said, DirectX10 was released after the 360 and was never supported by the 360. DirectX10 didn't do to well from what I've heard. I still want to say Microsoft getting DirectX11 out already is an indicator because if they want people to support it this time around, requiring all next gen Xbox games to use it would be a easy way to do it.

  14. @n8r

    Oh yeah he's special. He's grown up a lot since the show started. He was 10 on the island now he looks like a man.

  15. @ Big Blak

    This wasn't released to the press, but I have a friend who was a guard at Allegheny County jail in Pittsburgh.

    Kordell was arrested in Schenley Park for having sex with another dude inside a parked Escalade registered to him.

    This started out as rumor when I called my friend about it and he confirmed it. Said he made bail too. The season after that, the O-Line gave up on Kordell and made Tommy Maddox look great. The next season, Kordell got traded, Maddox got a concussion the second game of the season, and our brand new rookie QB had arguably the best rookie year of all-time taking the team to 15 and 1 (that 1 loss was the game Maddox was in) and lost to the Pats in the NFC championship game. The next year, the same rookie QB won his first Super Bowl.

    That rookie QB… was Ben Roethlisberger.

  16. @n8r

    I knew it! I wish the Bears wouldn't have picked him up. What a waste of money.

  17. possible trade huh? Roethlisberger would make a good Bronco, although I actually like the women here in Denver and wouldn't wish that upon them… haha

  18. @big blak – I'm working on it now. I got set back because my dog had an unexpected leg surgery over the weekend. I'll post it here when I'm done. I'd still like to get together with you guys for some co-op

  19. @ Shockwave

    Thats what I wanted to hear co-op, I forget whats your gamertag? Sorry about your dog bro.

  20. So for reasons unbeknown to me thus far….I submitted my credit card info to Blizzard and unfroze my WoW account. DAMN THAT GAME GETS ADDICTIVE!

    I think I'm buying Cataclysm when it releases.

  21. thanks man, actually it's my girlfriends dog, if it was mine it wouldn't have really been a huge issue. She likes to baby the dogs so she gets a little more worked up than me with these things.

    co-op does sound good. my gamertag is the same, shockwave562. I'm pretty sure we're already friends

  22. @ tokz

    Okay… so since what we all knew was going to happen has actually happened… NOW you see him getting traded?

    Dude… don't underestimate the black & gold. I don't want to have to say this again, but WE ARE NOT A TEAM CENTERED AROUND A QB!!!

    Dude, how many years did we make the playoffs with Kordell as QB? Hell, we made the playoffs with Tommy Maddox too.

  23. @n8r

    Exactly! you are not a team centered around a QB so why wouldn't they trade him. everyone in sports can be traded, if the offer and money sounds right a deal is made. It's up to the owners to agree to it.

  24. @ tokz

    Because in order for him to be traded for a draft pick, they'd have to get in touch with all of the teams in the league and get it done by tomorrow, AND we'd only trade him for a top 12 pick. That's unlikely to happen.

    I also think the Rooney's have faith in him. I think they'd rather be able to say "He had a bad spell, and we turned him around." over "We traded him because he screwed up." Even though this was his second accusation, he's STILL waiting to see what happens with the first one. They came kinda quick (no pun intended). Whereas Santonio got busted and suspended for weed a few years ago as well. They tried with Santonio… and it didn't work. Therefore, Santonio got traded to a team that could care less what you do in your free time as long as you can play ball.

    Then there's the money involved. Ben's contracted for QB dollars for 5 more years. This is a hefty tab for someone else to pick up even if they are willing to wait 6 games of a season for him. And… it would have to happen quick.

    Next season… different story. If whoever steps up in his place this year does well, Ben might not start the rest of the season when he comes back from suspension. Then… we might be looking for deals.

    To be honest, Ben is not the same player he was those first 2 years. He left alot of his skills on the front of that semi along with a good portion of his face.

  25. @ tokz

    Bradshaw is treated like yesterday's news. Sure, we respect what he did, but we also acknowledge the ass he's made of himself on TV since then.

  26. @ tokz

    I think Oakland's front office is too stupid to think like that. This is the same office that fired their Head coach the year after winning the Super Bowl.

    I never questioned whether or not it happen if the right deal came across… I questioned the likelihood of a good enough deal coming across. I think the Rooney's have faith in him and all… but history dictates that they are indeed not idiots (unlike any California team… and I'll include the Rams in there for the hell of it because they still have a somewhat large fanbase in CA)

  27. #1 overall is a lot to give up but 2-12 aren't too bad either. N8R is right though there's just not enough time for this to happen. Besides, I don't know what time is willing to walk in to a possible 6 game suspension at the cost of a top 10 draft pick

  28. @ Shockwave

    Lol I knew I had you on my friends list but didn't know if you had a gamertag like A JUDAS RIMMER!!!

    @N8R & Tokz & Shockwave

    For the sake of entertainment which team do you think he would be traded to and why?

  29. @ Big Blak

    I think he's staying with the Steelers. Next season… we'll have to see. It's all about overall value.

  30. @ N8R

    6 games with no pay is pretty heavy. I could see Ben taking the reins from Phillip Rivers next season.

  31. @ Big Blak

    No way… the Chargers have way too much misplaced faith in Rivers.

    I liked how Dixon played and I think he doesn't deserve to be overlooked because of ignorance to his talent. Batch is the practice QB and helps our Defense alot… and we got Byron Leftwich back. Byron could easily fit in to the style of QB Ben is, he's just not as accurate a passer.

    We have done pretty great things with terrible QB's in the past (why do I have to keep repeating this?)

    The other thing is… national sportscasters on TV and radio… HATE the Steelers. Always have. Mostly because most of them played for other teams that we made look like chumps. We always prove them wrong.

  32. @ N8R

    Agreed. I hate to say it but Ben is a better QB than Rivers. If Phillips was on the Steelers he would win a Superbowl. If Ben was on the Seahawks he could bring them to the big game but would lose because of the receivers.

  33. @Thundercracker

    Ah, the good old days indeed.

    @topic

    I think Nintendo will win and Sony will pass Microsoft.

    Bye, bye big Ben.

  34. @ Big Blak

    Ben has been skiddish ever since he got hit by that truck. The dude has metal plates in his face… and it shows in his playing ever since. He got knocked out once last year as well… and became even MORE skiddish.

    I honestly don't think Ben would be as good for any other team.

    And… ironically, the Steelers were trying to draft Phil Rivers the year we acquired Big Ben… but SD got him first. (dodged a bullet there, we did).

  35. @Big Blak

    I think the Raiders would be perfect. They don't like Jamarcus. They did well when he was not in the game. They can survive the 6 games (but i'm sure Ben would be back after the 4th game) without him. they were 5-11 last year, if Ben wouldn't come back until week 7 that's 10 more games, if they stay at 3-3 and go 5-5 when he comes back that's a way better record than 5-11.

  36. Numbers don't lie:

    373-255-2 in the regular season

    31-18 in the post season

    6 Championships

  37. not me! I've seen players try that but fail miserably. they either land on their head or just get tackled by the catcher. This guy will never be able to pull this off again.

  38. lol I should of read the Story in full, they got me

    @Tokz

    I don't have a twitter account, oh well.

  39. @Big Blak

    Oh thanks for that story, my friend is a big fan of French soccer. He's on Zidane's nuts! I'm sure this will make his day.

  40. @ Big Black;

    Tokz is Kurt! Thinnk about it. If you were married to Courtney Love, wouldn't you fake your own death and come back in a more discreet manner?

    I'm still waiting for Tupac to come on this site as well. I'm pretty sure I've seen him at Dolphin Mall last year buying sunglasses.

    -M

  41. I think the 360 will stay ahead of the PS3…until Microsoft produces their next console and Sony continues to sell the PS3, at that point they will probably catch up to 360 sales numbers…the Wii will keep selling at ridiculous numbers go down in history as the most purchased console of all time. I give it about 2 years until Microsoft has their next gen console come out, they are going to have to wait for Natal to sell for the 360, and then sometime after that they can come out with their new system. The lack of blu-ray, and the limited amount of space on DVD is a problem that Microsoft needs to fix, and soon. The PS3 will probably sell for several years after that and will sell much like the PS2 did after the PS3 was released. Nintendo will stick with the casual market on their next console, but is going to have to step up their game because I don't think that casual gamers who bought the Wii are going to be as inclined to buy another console too quickly…there has to be some more great marketing and some very catchy games for hardcore and casual gamers alike in order to sell the next system.

  42. @rpad

    dont forget to pick up gl#53 today!

    I also learned why i dont go to other comic book shops. I went to my non regular place and i didnt get my brightest day GL ring. The guy behind the counter seemed puzzled by my query of said ring. Needless to say i have to go buy the ring. Wait rpad, if you havent picked it up and dont care about the ring, i'll send you mine. I dont mind its juat another 3.99. Send me an email or if anyone else is interested in a GL#53 minus ring, let me know too.

  43. @Big Blak

    I think rpad mentioned that you have to clear the cache or cookes on your browser.

  44. not sure if you guys know already, but its official

    brees is on the cover of madden 2011

  45. @ Tokz

    Great article, I love the G3, G4, and G5 comps and the iPod, other than that Apple can suck a big fat one! I recently saw the Apple commercial from '84 or '86 and was like yea take down the machine! The machine is now Apple, I think they need to watch that commercial again.

  46. @BigBlak

    Happy that a Saint can grace it for the first time, unhappy that it is on a crappy piece of software.

    Madden curse ends this year.

  47. @Big Blak

    Thanks. I was wondering when Adobe was going to stand up for itself, after Apple gave it a big suck it two weeks ago.

  48. @BigBlak

    Nah, Brees will be fine. That rotator cuff and labrum injury didn't end it for him, then nothing will.

    Besides, divinity is on his side.

  49. @ Smartguy

    Thats what everyone says when their guy makes the cover, I'm just saying. But I do admire your unwavering faith.

  50. @BigBlak

    He did take a loser franchise to its first SB and won a decisive game against the perceived better team. Twice in a row if you are a butthurt Vikes fan. He also moved to a city with waterlines on most of the homes. The guy has good things going for him.

  51. i was gonna say that the madden curse has taken a year off, but im looking at the stats, and…it really hasnt

    good luck smartguy

  52. nfl draft day

    i hope we get cj spiller, then trade back up in the first round and get claussen

    but i suppose im just a dreamer…

  53. @ SG

    I'm not denying that at all, until the season is over we will not know if the curse will be broken.

    @thunder

    Lol that would be great but…..

    @ All

    Where is libala Timmy going in the draft? Predictions? And to make it even sweeter those with XBL should put some MS points on the line.

  54. @thunder

    I think your team is in the Big Ben sweepstakes instead of the Clausen sweepstakes.

    @BB

    We shall see. Faith my friend…faith.

  55. @smartguy

    buffalo general manager buddy nix has already "nixed" that idea

    see what i did there?

    im delightful

  56. @big blak

    i actually agree with kiper on this one

    i say he goes 30 to the vikings

  57. @big blak

    thats a total lie

    and i dont really wanna admit this

    but i guarantee that if hes still there, the bills get him in the second round

  58. @Thunder

    ZING! I actually think Kiper and Mayock are pretty spot on most of the time. Hard to go against them. Hell, Kiper's hair could win an argument on its own.

    @BB

    I just looked at the cover with Brees….here's some spin for ya. I think the curse will hit the Who Dats in the background. Brees is saved! LOL.

  59. Timmy goes in the first round.

    @BB

    Here's the tweet from Brees just now:

    drewbrees

    Here's what I have to say about the Madden curse: Destiny is more powerful than a curse. Whatever is meant to be will happen. Faith

    drewbrees

    If God will lead you to it he will lead you through it

  60. @ Madden curse

    Is it conceivable that the Madden curse will hit Larry Fitzgerald this year since he was on it last year with Troy Polamalu and Troy got hit, but Larry didn't?

    Maybe they set the Madden curse a year behind by putting 2 people on the cover.

  61. @Big Blak

    Dude, you're cool whether you watch Lost or not. Also, yes you do have your fan card back on this site. Feel free to talk and spread your Patriots love.

    @n8r

    thanks for making my head hurt. that's a brainteaser for sure.
