Coffee Talk #124: Gamer vs. Jet Lag

Technically, it’s coffee time where I am so the column name still applies. Ha! As expected, jet lag is totally kicking my ass. I didn’t believe in jet lag for the first 25 years of my life. I thought it was a sissy excuse for tired people. Then I did a quick work trip to Tokyo and was disoriented for several days after I returned. For all of you younglings reading this, it only gets worse as you get older.

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, Jim Carrey’s next girlfriend, Fusion Garage’s JooJoo tablet, or the Yankees and Red Sox taking 12 hours to complete three games, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

Anyway, gaming has been great with trying to deal with jet lag. Some people just stare at the ceiling until they fall asleep. I find EV training in Pokemon productive and repetitive, which usually helps me catch some Z’s. This trip I’ve been playing the hell out of Civilization Revolution for iPhone. Yes, I’ve played the game essentially the same way for over a thousand times, but I still love it. The repetition is soothing and it helps me relax.

When you guys and gals deal with jet lag or insomnia, what do you do? Is there a certain game you play? Maybe a graphic novel you bring with you on the road? How about web browsing on your phone? Let me know (please)! Maybe I’ll incorporate your techniques into my jet-lag fighting regimen.

  1. I don’t really do a lot of (ok any) traveling. But I do travel on the bus back and forth between campus and my apartment a lot, where I usually play some Plants V Zombies. I really like that game, and I actually like playing it more than any other PopCap game I have on my ipod. I used to play bejeweled, bookwork, and peggle a LOT, but now they have all been replaced by PVZ. It is amazing how addictive that game is. If you don’t have it, I recommend it. It will at least be worth one play through.

I was always a fan of the various car games though when it came to trips (because I almost always travel by car) and the states game is one of the best. You could modify this game and try to keep track of how many different people you come across and their ethnicity. See how many points you can get that way.

  2. What do you guys think of Philly getting rid of McNabb? I don't think that other kid has shown anything worthy of taking over from McNabb. Big mistake.

  3. @ RROD

I don't really have a solid opinion yet. i think McNabb is getting old and it's time for Philly to switch it up… but I can't be certain.

There's a real good chance he could do great things on another team.

  4. @N8R

That's a pretty cool list, I've seen a lot of those on other similar lists, but with Uncharted 2 definitely not on the previous lists.

Speaking of alexa toolbar…I don't remember what the number ranking for rpad.tv was when I first got the toolbar, but it seems like that number is slowly but surely climbing. Moving on up in the world!

  5. @N8R

Yeah I think when I first got it the number was holding steady for a day or two around 350,000ish, and I saw mine said 287,744 today as well. That's awesome that the 3DS story helped out as much as it did. I agree it would be awesome to beat the current 4961. I think we just have to figure out the best way to turn the daily hits into those people registering and posting.

  6. @N8R

I just remembered, I sent you an email but I didn't know if you had seen it yet, but I was just curious what font you set the logo in? I was messing around with some fonts on InDesign the other day and got curious. I couldn't really find a match by visual comparison, some were similar, just not thick enough or tall enough.

  7. @Ray

I read earlier that Gears of War 3 was announced for April 2011…if Cliff B wants some people to test it out I'm sure Iceman and I would be willing to *ahem* help. haha

  8. lol…..I'm a cronic insomniac. I almost always try and game until I crash, because otherwise I'll end up tossing and turning and keeping my wife awake. Last night it was endless games of MLB 2k10.

  9. @ bsukenyan

No, I haven't checked that email account yet, but I will soon.

I did however open up Photoshop to see the font and it's called Gill Sans, At least for the part that says "Raymond Padilla and friends talk yada, yada, yada" (which is what I always thought it should say word for word, but it is Ray's site after all so he got final word).

As for the "RPAD" part… I couldn't tell you. If I had to guess I'd say Arial or Arial Black. The height and width is adjustable. Usually when it comes to logos I do, I try to manipulate fonts in such ways that they are more original and less generic and/or copyable.

On my old computer, I could make my own original fonts, and I did… a lot. But I just haven't got a Mac application that does it yet.

  10. @RRoD: I think Philly fans who have been clammoring for the Eagles to dump McNabb for a decade are in for a shock when the Eagles go 6-10 next year. As a Giants fan, I would have appreciated them at least trading him out of the god damn division though. The guy kills us every year.

  11. @Nightshade386

I'm the same way. If I don't get enough games in each night, I can't get any sleep. Problem is when something is bugging me, I have no desire to play any games at all and I end up not sleeping till I finally get in the mood to play games again. (Hence my post at 3-4'o clock this morning)

  12. @RROD

I think they got rid of a very overrated QB. Never thought he was better than average. Struck me as a dumb quarterback when he didn't know about tie games.

I'm a saints fan, I know dumb qbs. Aaron Brooks era and the Billy Joe era.

  13. @McNabb

I've always liked McNabb but he is kind of dumb. how do you not know there are ties in OT. I'm sure the Eagles are glad to be done with them but i'm not sold on Kolb.

  14. @Smartguy: Having watched McNabb play in my team's division for a decade I can tell you, while he's not the most accurate passer and he can be rather streaky, the guy just knows how to win.

The first 4 NFC Championship games he got the Eagles to, he didn't have a single WR who deserved to be starting in the NFL. Don't forget that he got them to a Super Bowl with T.O. out injured. T.O. came back for the Super Bowl after missing the entire playoffs. And I have a real hard time blaming McNabb for the Eagles Defense giving up 30+ points to the Cardinals. He threw for 375 and 3 TD's in that game.

Is he the best playoff QB ever? No. But when you think about it, he's had roughly the same amount of playoff success as Brett Favre and Peyton Manning. The only difference is that when those two won their Super Bowls they didn't have to go through a team of the decade in the big game to win their rings. Favre got an average Patriots team from the weak AFC who's head coach was about to bail on them, and Manning got an overrated Bears team from a weak NFC. McNabb got the Patriots in the middle of the Tom Brady era.

And now that he's finally got a ton of offensive talent around him, they decide to go with the young unproven guy. Makes no sense to me at all.

  15. @Nightshade

All QBs who are not upper echelon can be streaky. Eli is a good example, so is Big Ben. Sometimes they are on fire. McNabb has choked more than his fair share of times as well. This past season was a great example. Back to back games they are blown out by Dallas. Kolb will be a good system QB I think. I don't think his game against the Saints this year should be the litmus by which to judge him. A lot of those yards were garbage yards. In fact over half.

I don't think Eagles will have that much of a dropoff with Kolb. Realistically losing Westbrook was just as bad, so that could make the biggest difference in them.

  16. @ NFL

The O-Line for the Redskins is horrible and Donny boy has bad knees, is he on the cover of Madden? (I know he isn't).

  17. Dallas was a tough matchup for Philly this year, Philly was a tough matchup for NY, and NY was a tough matchup for Dallas. Dallas had the ball for a combined 80 minutes in those two games. Toy Romo threw for 4 TD's. Where was the vaunted Philly defense? So I don't think you can look at those two games as the litmus test for McNabb either. He threw for over 3500 yards last year despite missing two games and the Eagles had the 5th best scoring offense in the NFL last year.

Also don't forget that two of the NFC championship games McNabb lost were to Carolina and Tampa Bay, two teams with outstanding defenses at the time (this was when McNabb had no receivers to throw to).

I'd take McCoy over Westbrook at this point. Westbrook has always been a human tinker toy in that it just doesn't take much to break him. Not that it matters since Andy Reid is allergic to the running game anyways. The Eagles had a combined 23 rushing attempts in those two games against the Cowboys, four of which were by NcNabb when he was running for his life because the offensive line couldn't block the Cowboys (a combined 8 sacks and 14 QB hits, plus 8 tackles for a loss).

  18. @ NFL (sorta)

The judge in Georgia is announcing whether or not they will press charges against Big Ben on Monday (fingers crossed).

  19. @Smartguy

McNabb's numbers are well above average. McNabb is a very good QB and I think it's stupid to get rid of a good QB for an unproven one. Don't be surprised if the Eagles go 6-10 this year and now that McNabb is gone who will they blame it on this time. As bad as Favre chokes every year no one would ever dream of getting rid of him. I don't understand why McNabb is the only good QB that gets crucified for the team not winning a Super Bowl. Phillip Rivers, Carson Palmer, and Tony Romo are all good QBs who have never gotten to a Super Bowl or as many conference championships as McNabb yet no one blames them and want to see them gone.

  20. @N8R

I'm sorry but even if Ben gets off Scott free from the law Roger Goddell still has to suspend him. This is the second time in about a year that he's been accused of sexual misconduct so something is definitely wrong.

  21. @RRoD: Having lived in Eagles country, I'm positive that they are the worst sports fans in the world. These people relentlessly booed Mike Schmidt when he was at the top of his game, but they relate to a thug like Allen Iverson. They Booed McNabb the day he was drafted and ran him out of town after 5 trips to the NFC championship game and a close Super Bowl loss to the Patriots.

  22. @Nightshade

So true. Some people don't know what they had until it's gone and then it's too late. I just can't see Kolb playing as good as McNabb did.

  23. that one girl ben "alledgedly" raped was a waitress

    so, on that note…i prefer

    "ben rapethisserver"

  24. and as far as mcnabb goes, i like him, hes very talented…but he can go straight to hell

he didnt wanna come to buffalo, but he went to washington??

if we sign jason campbell, i may become a texans fan or something…ive been a bills fan since 88'

  25. Right now I play battlefield or look at some sites……

More often than not though I’ll drop a few dollars on iTunes and listen to my purchases on the couch with my earbuds in and fall asleep.

  26. @RROD and Nightshade

we have to agree to disagree. I don't like touting stats as defense but Brees threw for over 5k yards season before last because he had to. Stats are deceptive. Philly runs a system that makes qbs look good. Didn't Feely and Detmer win games (more than 1) and don't forget about Jeff Garcia. McNabb was at his best a few years ago when he could run and take a hit. Now that it's over in that area for him, he's an average at best pocket qb.

    @RROD specifically

Favre > McChoke. Washington won't be in the NFCCG nor will McNabb be an MVP candidate.

    @Big Blak

    between Brees, Allen and Wayne.

  27. @ Smartguy

Hit me up on AIM sometime when you’re on your home computer. I’ll hook you up with tons of music. Just about anything you can think of.

    AIM screename = n8fitz

    @ anyone else

Feel free to do the same.

  28. Well usually on my trips i bring my gf so i don’t have many sleepless nights. When i’m not with her i just watch tv or just head off to the hotel’s gym if it’s 24 hours and run for a bit.

    @jim carrey
I’m surprised that he did break up with her. Oh well he can find some younger piece i bet.

    @red sox v yankees
I don’t really mind games taking awhile but the thing that made me laugh was the umpire complaining about the games taking so long.

  29. McNabb is the new Culpepper, in my humble opinion. Best to go out on top then suffer a prolonged, agonizing decline to QB mediocrity.

    -M

  30. I found a pretty cool YouTube video regarding the destruction of NYC by classic video game characters:

  31. Jeff Garcia is actually a pretty good QB who has played most of his career in a west coast system, so throwing his success w/ Philly out there as a way to deflate McNabb doesn't make a lot of sense. Fact of the matter is, Philly has gotten by with average QB play against lesser opponents when McNabb has gotten hurt, but they never won in the playoffs without him. Despite a lack of offensive weapons for most of his career, they always had a very stout defense up until last year.

In fact, if you look at AJ Feely's stint with Philly in '02 when he started 5 games late in the season, it's not exactly stellar. He beat the 7-9 Rams, beat the 7-9 Shehawks, threw 5 INTs in a win over 7-9 Redskins, beat the 5-11 Cowboys, and lost to the 10-6 Giants, the only team with a winning record he faced. When McNabb came back for the post season, he led them to the NFC title game.

And if you can look at his career stats and tell me where the drop off is, I don't see it. In fact, he's been a better QB as far as completion % and QB rating the last few years than he was earlier in his career when he ran a lot….primairly because he finally has some weapons around him. I swear DeSean Jackson can't be stopped unless you've got a sniper in the upper deck.

  32. @nightshade

it's a system that makes qbs look better than they actually are. Like Denver used to make all RBs look like studs.

I'd rather Rivers or Romo over McNabb.

  33. @N8R

I loved the part where the tetris blocks started taking out the buildings! I just started thinking about how I could have done it quicker or better. lol

  34. @ Body Slam

The Tetris bit was the part that made me chuckle as well.

    @ Smartguy

I pretty much always have iChat up. As long as I’m home, I’ll hook you up. I got just over 100 GB’s of music now. I also have all the GNR albums. Appetite is without a doubt my favorite though.

  35. @N8R

It’s such a great game. I have been playing tetris a lot lately, trying to get my skills up to beat the game in under 20 minutes for the achievement…So far no luck, I’ve plateaued at about 25-26 minutes.

  36. @Smartguy

Like Nightshade said, Garcia is a good QB and had success in San Fransico too so that doesn't take away anything from McNabb. Rivers and Romo are good but neither has either gotten as far as McNabb so if McNabb is average to you then what does that make those two. As far as Favre, he played great last year but choked in the playoffs as usual but the Vikings have no holes. To win a Superbowl it takes a great team all around with no big holes. You know full well the Saints wouldn't have won anything if they didn't fix that defense and sign Brees. Brees didn't win anything in San Diego.

  37. @ bsukenyan (I like Body Slam better)

When I first got it (and I think I was the first one asked to use it because Ray is a little shy like that), it was just under a million. Then it dropped to over a million. Since the 3DS post, it’s been rising ever since.

Right now, I have it at 287,744… not too shabby. But still, I ‘ll be happy once we get it lower than the current 4961.

  38. Microsoft was about to have some heads roll. I came up to my aunts house and I was using her verizon fios connection to hook up my 360. I don't know if anyone other than Big Blak noticed, but I started playing a game called Tinker which is on games for windows live on my laptop. That added gamerscore to what was previously saved on the xbox servers. Meanwhile I have made tons of progress on Dirt and Call of Duty 2, getting tons of achievements on my xbox. So when I went to try and put everything together and finally sign in to XBL with my 360, it was showing everything really messed up and not giving me my achievements and finished games. It is all fixed though for now thankfully. Now I just have to get the internet working at my place again.

    @N8R

    Thanks for the font information.

  39. yeah what did jeff garcia ever do without both jerry rice and a young Terrell owens?

    that dude sucks

  40. @Thundercracker

What did Troy Aikman ever do without Michael Irving and Emmit Smith?

What did Peyton Manning ever do without Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne?

What did Kurt Warner ever do without Torry Holt, Isaac Bruce, and Marshal Faulk?

What did Kurt Warner ever do without Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin?

What did John Elway ever do without Shannon Sharpe and Terrel Davis?

What did Joe Montana ever do without Jerry Rice and Roger Craig?

Show me a hall of fame QB and I'll show you a hall of fame supporting cast.

  41. @rrod

you comparing jeff garcia to those guys?

    but ok

peyton has made austin collie a fantasy option…garcia couldnt scrub mannings toilet

john elway went to four superbowls, two without those guys

you cant give me one reciever and tell me that he makes a qb. The real question you have to ask is…maybe if roddy white or lee evans were in indy, would they be every bit as good as reggie wayne? I think so

ok though, i accept your challenge

    warren moon

    phil simms

    archie manning

    dan marino

    dan fouts

    len dawson

    boomer esiason

    brett favre

none of these guys have ever completed a pass to a hall of fame reciever, (maybe lance alworth?) they all made everyone around them great. If any of these guys had played for the steelers of the late 70s or the niners of the 80s or the cowboys of the 90s…theyd be talked about like montana or brady.

you cant argue with your logic, but garcia lacks the consistancy over his career to be considered in this discussion

  42. lol just realized that the 8 qbs in my list dont have as many rings as aikman does

    list:2 (simms, favre)

    aikman:3

  43. @ RROD

I noticed you left the team with the most Super Bowl rings off your list.

In honor of tokz, you also left off the team with the most Hall of Famers. (I got your back tokz).

In honor of Big Blak, What did Tom Brady ever do without that award worthy stick up his ass? (Just messing with you Blak… but seriously, I hate the damn Pats).

  44. All I'm saying is the team has to be complete to win a Super Bowl and not just the QB. The Pats didn't have hall of fame receivers but they had a killer defense and a killer defense is more important than a QB when it comes to winning a Superbowl, just ask the Bucs. There have been Super Bowls won by average QBs but never has a team with a bad defense won a Super Bowl. Speaking of the Colts, every year they would get to the playoffs and lose the first game with that bad defense but when the defense finally got good they won the Super Bowl but Peyton gets all of the credit.

  45. The Colts lost in the first round because the Pats had that stellar defense you were talking about and not to mention some tapes.

  46. The Steelers are totally the team to look at when talking about defense winning championships. In the 70's, our offense was comprised of lucky dudes who randomly pulled a few miracles out of their asses (I'm looking at you Bradshaw and Franco).

Last year we proved it again on the opposite side of the spectrum. We finished 9 and 7 in 3rd place in our division… BUT, we had a 4000 yard passer, a 1000 yard rusher, and 2 2000 yard receivers all in the same year for the first time in franchise history. They put numbers on the board, but our defense (suffering badly without Troy) didn't keep enough numbers off the board.

Long story short, defense wins championships and the Steelers are the best team in history (Hi haters).

  47. @n8r

thanks for bringing up the bears but they havent had a HoF qb since sud luckman!

you need a complete team to win a superbowl, a competent qb, decent running game and a decent defense. There are more examples for a great defense wins superbowls, i.e. The bucs, ravens, steelers, bears (85), giants, dolphins, and i could go on and on. All of these teams, when they won had a qb that made the least mistakes in the superbowl, especially when you look at the bucs and ravens examples.

  48. @Tokz

Bucs are a bad example. Gruden knew their playbook because Callahan didn't change it. He had intricate detailed knowledge of what the Raiders were going to do. Damn near had spygate type of info on them.

Great offenses win just as many SBs if you want to split hairs. The 49ers and Cowboys (90s version) won because they couldn't be stopped and had average to above average D play. I've never been a fan of the defense wins championships honestly. Takes all 3 phases. Saints showed that this year. The Pats won with special teams as did the Packers in their last superbowl. All is important.

Team has to rely on its strengths to win the big dance.

  49. @smartguy

the bucs are a good example its not like brad johnson was an pro bowl type qb. If it wasnt for the defense and their offense's ability to protect the ball they never wouldve made it to the super bowl.

  50. @ Smartguy

It's also arguable that when the 49ers were in their heyday, defensive backfield throughout the league wasn't all that good. That's why they kept bombing it and Jerry Rice could dust anyone that tried to catch him. It's also arguable that when the 90's Cowboys were in their heyday, Defense throughout the league wasn't all that spectacular either.

There are situational examples or "exceptions to the rules" but when looking back at ALL the people who've won football championships whether it be pro, college, high school, or even midget league… it usually proves that the defense got them there.

  51. @ Smartguy

Tokz raises a good point that I kinda brushed on… you have to GET to the big dance in order to win the big dance.

That takes more than one game.

  52. i think what it boils down to is that if you want to have a dynastic type team you need all 3 phases. Any team with a great offense or a great defense can win a superbowl. They wont win more than one though

the steelers of the 70s did not have a great offense…bradshaw was not that good, but that might be the greatest defense ever assembled, and that offense was good enough

any dynastic team is going to be well balanced.

  53. @ Thundercracker.

I agree. the 70's Steeler offfense was the epitome of good enough. Bradshaw had one thing going for him and that was his ability to stay on his feet. Before him, scrambling QB's pretty much didn't exist. But, the D was more than likely the best ever. They literally had to change the rules of the game since them.

In the 80's… we sucked pretty bad. Once Cowher took over, we made the playoffs ever year except like 4 or 5 years since then…. we've also been fairly well balanced since then, so I see your point.

  54. @N8R

Have to disagree with you. In the 80s the 49ers were plain spectacular. The defenses were given tremendous leeway compared to now. Pass Interference? rare call. Roughing the passer? Rare call. Holding? Only a 5 yard penalty. Their O took them places and put other D's in the dust. Rice blew ppl away because he was Jerry Rice. Arguably the greatest player ever in the NFL. He was good for damn near 2 decades.

The Cowboys of the 90s were a scoring machine. In fact, the Cowboys and the Broncos of the 90s could perhaps be examples of "if you have the best O line in football or ever assembled, you will make it to the big dance and win it."

Defense wins championships was a good mantra 15-20 years ago…but since then the game has changed. Historically yes, good defense has won its fair share…but now the O and Special Teams are playing larger and as large roles as the D. I don't think a good or great Defense has a significant enough advantage in today's game.

  55. I think we can all agree that you need all 3 phases to win a Super Bowl which brings me to my original point, McNabb is not to be blamed solely for the Eagles not winning a Super Bowl. Let's see if they get there this year without him.

  56. @rrod

you need all 3 phases to win MULTIPLE super bowls ;)

heres a trivia question to prove my point

when the bucs won in 2002 who was their starting qb? You may know this one, but youll have to think about it i bet :)

  57. thats right smartguy

brad johnson is a super bowl winning qb..i wouldnt say that team had a great offense, would you?

  58. @ Smartguy

I just want to point out that you said it was a good mantra 15-20 years ago and the teams you used as your examples were 15-20 years ago.

No matter how good the O is, if they can't score they aren't winning.

  59. Here's another trivia question:

2 of the greatest QB's to ever play the game, Joe Montana and Dan Marino… Where were they born and raised?

  60. Trent Dilfer was the QB for the Ravens when they won the Super Bowl. The offense wasn't great but they were good enough and so was the Bucs offense with Brad Johnson.

  61. Since N8R brought up Dan Marino, he never won jack squat so do you guys consider him not a good QB? Why didn't Miami say "he can't get it done so it's time to replace him"?

  62. @rrod

thats exactly my point, miami NEVER had a good enough defense to get past my bills or the denver broncos of the late 80's early 90's

    @n8r

pittsburgh, marino went to pitt and montana went to notre dame

and while youre at it, put jim kelly in there as well, as he was also born there and went to east brady high school…hes was my hero along with cal ripken

  63. @n8r

steelers just traded santonio to the jets for a 5th round pick. I guess they had enough of him, huh?

  64. @ tokz

Maybe? We reaquired Antwaan Randle El too though. Both of them have similar receiving styles except Randle El can pass better.

Get ready to see some gadgets coming out of Pittsburgh.

    @ Thundercracker

Right, and true. We also spawned Jeff Goldblum, Michael Keaton, and Trent Reznor. Granted, none of them can throw a ball worth a damn… but it's still cool.

  65. @N8R

15-20 years ago is when it stopped being the norm. I guess I wasn't too clear, sorry. I still stand by it though.

    @RROD

Dan Marino played in a different era in the NFL. Different kind of coach, different mentality of all involved in the decision making. Would he be thrown out today? Probably not since he was the centerpiece of the offense. Philly knows that McNabb is expendable because they run a variation of the west coast system and it will make a qb look better than he is. Plug and play system. Granted it takes some talent, but not a Manning type of talent. It really is hard to compare the two.

  66. im with smartguy

reggie bush belongs nowhere on that list, wheres vernon gholston? wheres todd marinovich, andre ware, mike williams or andre wadsworth

    that list is a joke

  67. im still mad about that inclusion of reggie, dude has scored 34 touchdowns in 4 seasons..and hes on my fantasy team (uncle rico)

  68. I can't remember the last time I saw Bush on ESPN for football related issues other than the Super Bowl.

  69. @ N8R

That was a good article but most of the players where being drafted while I was playing with my He-Man toys lol. If you find a more recent list with someone like Matt Leinart on it Im all ears.

  70. @Big Blak

dude that list had JaMarcus Russell, Reggie Bush, and Charles Rogers those are busts in the last 5 years.

  71. Lol your right it did, but there has to be more, When did Joey Galloway get drafted? Im sure he would be considered a bust but the team itself was busted haha.

  72. Reggie only rushed for 390 yards last year. If that's not a bust for a 2nd overall pick then I don't know what is.

  73. @ guys

I just thought it was funny… I love negative football stats.

    @ Big Blak

In this day and age, it's getting harder and harder for men to avoid that stat. There are lots of women who are just liars. Usually if you stay in relationships, you can avoid them. But they sometimes to lie in different ways.

I suppose we may deserve it after all the crap we out women through throughout the course of history (not a political statement).

  74. To RROD's credit:

There were alot of Falcons on that list… he's man enough to take the heat and move forward.

There weren't any Steelers on that list… but then again, I don't remember the last time we had a draft pick that high… maybe Troy Polamalu or Big Ben… but I don't know if they were in the top 10 overall off the top of my head, but i think they were. We see how that worked out… Haters.

  75. @tokz

    Bush shouldn't be on it

    @RROD

read above. We can argue all day long, but the Falcons would love to have him.

  76. If I had to comprise a list of the biggest draft busts in recent memory with stats off the top of my head… I think most of the list would be 49ers. Their front office is terrible.

  77. Have to add Jonathan Sullivan to the list. Top 6 pick and started less than 5 games in 3 seasons. He might have only been active for 16.

  78. @Smartguy

We've been over this before. I assure you that the Falcons DO NOT want Reggie Bush at that price tag and that high of a pick for that little of a return on the investment.

    @N8R

Our first round pick a few years ago named Jamaal Anderson(DE) is another bust.

  79. @Smartguy

One more thing, I know Bush is on your team so it's personal for you but if SOOOOO many people consider him a bust then there IS some truth to it. NO ONE considers Maurice Jones-Drew(who was picked after Bush in the 1st round) a bust, wonder why? Just look at the numbers. And no the Jags haven't won a Super Bowl because they don't have a good defense and Drew Brees.

  80. reggie had over 1000 all purpose yards, thats about as much as marques colston

Thats why the saints work, because there are NO superstars besides brees in that offense, no one whines or bitches about not getting the ball, brees just finds the open guy whoever the hell it is…they had 4 recievers last year who were rosterable for fantasy purposes. The fact is as long as reggie is in that offense we shall never know what he would do in an offense that employed one feature back. He averaged 5 yards per carry this past year, dude is good, man.

    @n8r

if memory serves me, ben fell to number 11, and polamalu was a second round pick

  81. You know, it's funny that throughout the history of the NFL that RBs are judged by RUSHING yards. Emmit Smith had X amount of RUSHING yards, Ladanian Tomlinson had X amount of 1000 yard RUSHING seasons, Chris Johnson RUSHED for over 2000 RUSHING yards last year, and Adrian Peterson holds the record for the most RUSHING yards in a game but when it comes to Reggie Bush it's always ALL PURPOSE yards because his RUSHING yards are so low. That's funny to me. What if all of the REAL RBs counted their ALL PURPOSE yards too? Reggie's ALL PURPOSE yards would pale in comparison to the REAL RBS ALL PURPOSE yards.

  82. (I hit submit by mistake too early, I wasn't finished)

The REAL RBs are judged by 1000 yard RUSHING season and it's funny that in order for Bush to equal 1000 yards you have add up rushing yards, receiving yards, AND special team yards just to equal what the REAL RBS simply rushed for without adding their receiving yards and special team yards. Am I the only one who finds that funny for a 2nd overall pick?

  83. @Thundercracker

"reggie had over 1000 all purpose yards, thats about as much as marques colston"

Are you seriously comparing a receiver's numbers who ONLY RECEIVES to an RB's numbers who RUSHES, RECEIVES, AND RETURNS KICKS? If Colston rushed, received, and returned kicks he would have much more than 1000 all purpose yards. Colston only received so you can only compare Reggie's receiving yards with his.

  84. @smartguy

I was pointing out to Big Blak about recent players not being on the list. I'm sorry if me pointing out Bush offended you but RROD has a point. Bush is way too inconsistent to not be considered a bust for that high of pick. If they would've drafted him in the late 2nd or late 3rd then this is what you would expect. When a team drafts in the first round for running back it's for a franchise back. I should know the Bears wasted away many first round drafts on RBs after Walter Payton.

  85. I myself am finding it hard to disagree with RROD's logic (as usual).

Yet to be fair, 4.0 yards per rush isn't bad. That's a good stat. We're also comparing him to guys like Emmitt Smith and he's only had like half the yearly attempts as most of the greats in their first 4 years.

In my opinion, my favorite RB of all time was Walter Payton. I don't think it's even fair to compare Bush to a guy like that… OR Barry Sanders. I don't think he's in that league.

However, he's had about half the yearly attempts as those guys in their first 4 years (and they played shorter seasons) and about half of the yards per year. I think if Reggie got the ball more, it might be a different story. BUT… the Saints are winning by passing it. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

    But he's no Eric Dickerson.

  86. @RROD and Tokz

not personal. I think you two look at it through to narrow of a prism. He isn't a traditional back and can't be judged as one. Yet it continues to be the litmus.

As far as everyone or a majority claiming a bust so it must be true..bupkis. Every team in the draft passed on Colston. Every team passed on Pierre Thomas. Dolphins passed on Brees. Twice. League concensus is a horrible way of deciding if someone is good or not.

    @bigblak

    points win games, not yards.

Thundercracker nailed it though. No primadonnas on the team.

  87. @N8R

Why can't we compare a 2nd overall pick to the greats, who most of were not picked as high as Bush. Put it this way, the guys that you mentioned like Emmit, Walter Payton, and Barry Sanders, I'm positive that you and everyone else would still pick them as high as they got put after the fact. Knowing what we know now, would you honestly still take Bush with the 2nd overall pick if you could do it over again?

  88. @Smartguy

"As far as everyone or a majority claiming a bust so it must be true..bupkis. Every team in the draft passed on Colston. Every team passed on Pierre Thomas. Dolphins passed on Brees. Twice. League concensus is a horrible way of deciding if someone is good or not."

Bad example. There are always diamonds in the ruff that no one saw but that can't be used to say the concensus is a horrible way of deciding if someone is good or not when someone is picked 2nd overall and is paid a lot of money and don't give a proper return. Colston was a nice surprise at that late of a pick and low of a price tag who received as much as Bush rushed, received, and returned. NO ONE considers Adrian Peterson a bust because the numbers shoots down any bust claims and we don't have to use all purpose yards and make all sorts of excuses to justify his pick because his proof is in the pudding.

  89. @smartguy

he's a bust because he's not a franchise running back, like i mentioned previously a 2nd overall pick is a franchise player, someone to build around. A franchise back shouldn't have to share time with 2 other running backs. I consider Bush a bust because of these reasons.

  90. @RROD

MJD doesn't fit in the with Saints O, so no. He wouldn't want to be the short yard back…or come in on random plays…so he'll be a waste of space.

    @Tokz

A player you build around? Really? Like Chris Long? Really? Mario Williams? Really? No. There is good value there. Ask Brian Urlacher how good Reggie is. He should know, he couldn't catch "the bust".

Why is it so difficult for anyone to accept the fact that he isn't a traditional RB…much like Westbrook isn't or even Ronnie Brown? I give up.

  91. @RROD

It wasn't about diamonds in the rough…it was about general media reactions to players and how they gauge them as well as how other NFL scouting depts gauge players.

I like Bush, he fits in nicely here. Does what needs to be done. Gets clutch TDs when we need them. Scores on the Falcons a few times per game. It's nice. :)

  92. Emmitt only got those yards because Dallas had the best O line of all time. He wasn't touched until at least he got up to the LBs.

  93. @ Smartguy

Jerome Bettis was far from a traditional back as well… look at his numbers (focussing of course on his first 4 years):

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/375445-the-top

    @ RROD

I don't think it's fair because he's not as good as those guys.

As for the picks… I probably would have picked Reggie over Vince Young. However, to be fair I really don't know who most of the guys on that list are. I know who Santonio Holmes is though!

  94. @Smartguy

"Ask Brian Urlacher how good Reggie is. He should know, he couldn’t catch “the bust”.

That not saying anything. NO linebacker should be able to catch ANY running back.

  95. @smartguy

Yes. The Texans have been building their D-line around Mario Williams. Chris Long was drafted for the Dolphins to build their O-line. I don't know why don't you see that. If teams that draft in the top 5 or top 10 do not draft franchise players probably it sets them back. Look at all the QBs that the Bengals had on the Bust list and look at all the running backs the bears have drafted over the years in the first round. Curtis Enis, Rashaan Salaam, Anthony Thomas, Cedric Benson (but now he's doing better!) . All first rounders, you honestly can't see that. I'm measuring Bush on that because that's how you justify a 2nd overall pick. Bush was seem to be able to do it all but he's just a good option/pass catching back and that's why draft in the 3rd round for. I've never quoted stats to justify drafting someone because you cant compare a offensive player to a defensive player or into schemes but he's a bust to me because he's not a franchise back and i bet if the Saints would do it over again they wouldn't draft him again in that round.

  96. @N8R

"I don’t think it’s fair because he’s not as good as those guys."

Why not? Isn't a 2nd overall pick expected to be one of the greats? As for the list, there's plenty of PRO BOWLERS worthy of a high pick that were picked after Bush.

  97. correction on my 8th sentence. Bush seemed to be able to do all phases of running back assignments in college, run, catch and block but in the NFL he's only proven to be able to catch but that's about it.

  98. @Smartguy

Tokz is right, guys like Mario Williams are franchise players and the Texans defense is built around him but Chris Long is a bust. Mario Williams is a Pro Bowl DE that averages in the top 5 DEs with sacks which is what DEs are judged by and we don't have to make up a stat in order to try to justify his high pick.

  99. @RROD

It's hard to compare those other players with Bush because it all goes with needs of the team but thank you for agreeing on my assessment on why he's a bust for a 2nd overall pick.

  100. @tokz

You're thinking of Jake Long with Miami. Chris Long is a bust DE that the Rams drafted very high and the son of Howie Long.

  101. @Tokz

So you think we drafted wrong and our franchise has been set back with Bush?

A good option at USC was what Bush was. He had Lendale White to hit the short power back yards. He was a committee back there. It's what he is with the Saints.

If the Saints thought he wasn't worth anything or didn't find a value in him, they'd have traded him this offseason or cut him. Loomis and Payton know what they have.

    @RROD

It was to rib him only.

    @N8R

Comparing him to the older guys is indeed inaccurate. For starters, no RB has the skills that Sanders had. None. The only one close in my book is Steven Jackson. The guy does it all and has a shitty team. Second behind Sanders is Sweetness. Again a talent that cannot be duplicated. Bush was compared directly to Gale Sayers who was a feature back…the game focused on that.

Media/Fantasy Owners/Falcons fans :) / etc are calling him a bust because they didn't realize or fail to still realize what kind of offensive system Bush was going in to. He isn't the star. He isn't the focal point. We drafted the BPA and made him fit into the system that begins and ends with Drew Brees. Everyone thought the Saints were going to be a tote the rock with Reggie constantly team and that he would mimic his college stat of avg TD run of 35yds. That doesn't happen in the NFL.

  102. @Tokz

In addition to catching and running well, Bush is also the best blocker out of the RBs currently on the roster. Picks up the blitz real good. One of the reasons Brees is the best in the league vs Blitz.

  103. @RROD

Thank you for pointing that out. I realized it now but you've already corrected it.

  104. Unrelated to current NFL discussion but I bought my grandfather a DSi XL yesterday. I must say, I was genuinely impressed with the screen clarity and size. The device itself isn't overly large. I had my doubts but got it for him in hopes that it would be big enough for him to see.

(he had some pretty serious surgery and can barely move for at least 2 months, so this will keep him idle lol)

In short, if you need a new one, don't be shy of the XL model.

  105. @ RROD

I don't know really what the standard is on that… but A Heisman winning top 5 overall pick? He sholuld at least be able to get 1 2000 yard season and get away with killing his wife 20 years later.

  106. @smartguy

The saints are still looking to solve their problem with the backfield, no? If you draft in the top 10 for a position and you're still looking for answers either via free agency or the draft then that pick is considered a waste and a setback.

  107. @Tokz

The saints don't like to use just one back. Nor do the Eagles. Or Cowboys. Or Jets. Or Miami. Common. Payton is offensive minded, he wants O players every draft. The only position the Saints won't try and improve or add good depth to is QB. Not this year anyway. Unless for some reason Colt McCoy goes to jail a week before the draft and falls to the 4th round.

Question since you are a Bears fan, do you consider Benson a bust? Or did he just need a better system? Also, do you think Forte is a flop? (fyi, I'm a huge Cutler fan so I'm hoping good things for you guys this year. I'm drafting him. Will be a steal)

  108. @ Smartguy

Last year around this time, everyone was picking apart the Steelers… I feel your pain, I do.

  109. In other sports news:

Penguins are in the playoffs! GO PENS!

I'm gonna have to change my avatar.

    @ Tokz

I hope to see the Blackhawks in the finals instead of those damn Red Wings.

  110. @smartguy

Benson is a bust but that's because his laziness got to him. He only got it together after his arrest. There's a reason why he didn't get signed until after the season started. Every team saw what Benson was made of and passed. The Bengals signed him out of necessity.

Forte is too early to be called a bust because he's only entering year 3, i dont make assessments on busts until 4 or 5 years. I like him and the O-line is horrible now but he still manage 1,000 + two years ago and fell short of 1,000 this past year playing through an injury too. I'm hoping that he will bounce back and have a good year like his rookie year but if he can't break 1,000 and he's healthy then yes but i still have two more years to assess that. thanks i hope Cutler bounces back too. We need some good news after not being able to draft high this year thanks to the trade.

  111. @ Smartguy and RROD

No maybe, I just watched the press conference. And honestly, I hope Goodell suspends him. What he was doing that night in the circumstances around the allegation was without a doubt immoral. This guy is a role model for children. The guy needs to grow up and slow down or else NOT be a role model for children.

The courts can't do squat about that… but the league can.

  112. @N8R

    #134 is so effin funny!

    @Smartguy

Don't feel bad about the target Im the only PATS fan, Im sure I will be catching shit from everyone real soon.

    GO RED SOX!!!

  113. @ Tokz

I am not responsible for the performance of the Hawks… but if we see each other for the cup… a wager is almost a given.

  114. @ Big Blak

Thank you… I was thinking nobody noticed.

The Bruins are in the playoffs too.

  115. @N8R

6 seed baby! Honestly I dont really care for hockey. I watch it sometimes but its 3rd on my list O' sports (Football, Basket and Baseball, then hockey).

  116. @ N8fitz

Im not missing anything today lol, I can see we are all passionate about our football!

  117. @ Big Blak

I'm not much of a basketball fan myself. I got into it when I was a kid for a while when the Bulls and Jordan was around… but I quickly lost interest.

One thing I noticed though living this close to LA is the Laker vibe. The Laker fans are very similar to the Steeler fans in the way that they can have nothing in common, but still have long great conversations about the Lakers. It' like an air of positivity when there really should be none. In fact, the more I feel the Laker vibe the more I think…

I must be a Clippers fan.

  118. @ Big Blak

Actually, I hated the Mets most of my natural life. I'm a Pirates fan (sigh). And back when that meant something positive, we were in the same division as the Mets. We were always fighting with the Mets. If we were fighting for first in the division, it would be with the Mets. If we were fighting for last in the division, it would be with the Mets.

It is against my DNA to say anything positive about the Mets.

  119. @ Big Blak

Yeah, see… they're STILL chasing our losing streak. God damn Mets…. I HATE those guys.

Don't get me wrong… the Pirates suck… BAD! But I was raised with those guys. i was there when Barry was skinny. One of the only positive things i can say about them is that PNC Park is gorgeous. Possibly the best place to see a ball game in the league. The food is outstanding, there's not a bad seat in the place, tickets are cheap, casino next door,… but the team is god awful.

One thing I may hate as much as the Mets is Bob Nutting. I swear if I ever saw that guy on the street, bad things would happen for how he stole my childhood heroes and made them the laughing stock they are.

We need to trade Bob Nutting… the bastard deserves a taste of his own medicine.

  120. @ N8R;

You do realize that's how Skynet stared right? … Just one little harmless magnetic accelerator "toy" that would never be the basis of an intelligent millitary weapon network, seemingly hell-bent on enslaving humanity.

    -M

  121. @N8R

No. It transfers power between multiple balls and magnets adding power as it goes until the power is transferred to the last ball. Railguns activate and deactivate a series of magnets along a path causing the projectile to follow the path.

  122. i guess you guys dont understand what the word "bust" means

hes a pivotal player on the defending super bowl champions

sean payton just payed him an 8 million dollar roster bonus, sean payton knows more about football than we do

    @rrod

actually hes a LOT like MJD, MJD hasnt rushed for a 1000 yards in 3 years, hes averaged less than 1000 yards per season for his career…its not all about rushing yards

  123. if someone were trying to make an argument about reggie being a bust, they really cant talk about performance on the field…they should be talking about his propensity for INJURY

dude is fragile, therefore i will admit that hes been somewhat disappointing, but a bust? really guys?

if hes a bust, mike vick was a bust too…qbs should be able to throw the ball, right?

  124. @ Thundercracker

That's what my mom said when I tried to convince her that Big Ben should be suspended.

She's 63 talking about "He has 2 Super Bowl rings, what's the problem with these women?"

She'a also happy we traded Santonio though. She never liked him. She has always called him "Santonio 'Motherf#%ker' Holmes". When he made the catch that got us to the Super Bowl, both me and my brother were like "Mom, you do realize that you're not allowed to make fun of Santonio anymore, right? Switch your focus to Ike Taylor… he deserves it."

  125. im excited about the holmes trade, im a mike wallace owner in a dynasty league

mike wallace shall lead me to the fantasy moutaintop…

  126. I hope Wallace gets more receptions now too. However, we also have Randle El back. The key to our receivers though, is that everyone always double covers Hines Ward… because of what happens if they don't.

I must say… the Jets are starting to look fierce this year coming up. They got LT now apparently.

  127. @thundercracker

Indeed. Someone pointed out that Cedric Benson was a bust because he was lazy, but then pulled his act together. I think Top 10 picks who are busts are indeed lazy. Being lazy or perhaps crazy should be the top criteria for that title. Russell, VY, Charles Rogers, etc. I can't accuse Bush of being lazy. The guy plays as much as Payton lets him.

Also another reason he isn't a bust (you might need to be in NOLA for this one) is that once we drafted him, we sold out the Superdome. Bear in mind that the dome still had no roof and they were still cleaning the place up from the bodies being stacked in the coolers. Nobody knew whether or not the dome would reopen. Just him by himself helped do that. It wasn't Brees or Payton. Since then Bush has spent a ton of money in the area and brings a lot of attention to the city. Win Win.

  128. @ N8R

The Jets are gunning for the Pats with all those vets, its going to be crazy in the AFC east this season.

    @Smartguy

Thanks thats a great story, I had no idea about that.

  129. @big blak & N8r

yeah the jets look tough, the pats are always good, and then on top of that youve got the bills poised to make a run. The bills look scary this year. Weve added….no..one

  130. No team in the northeast stays bad, mind you im only 24 and have been following sports for heavily for about 8 years.

  131. yeah cause before 8 years ago the pats sucked….i love new england fans!!

none of them were there for the steve grogan/drew bledsoe days

  132. "following sports for heavily for about 8 years."

    heavily is the key word.

I used to watch them as a kid but I wasn't into it. I remember the Drew days, we had Curtis Martin, Troy Brown, Reggie White, Willie Mcginest and Ben Coats. Those were my favorite players but I know how bad they used to suck.

  133. im just bitter, i hate new england..ironically i go to vermont for vacation every year–but i hate myself for doing it

  134. i didn't even connect that Thundercracker. Oops. I was just curious if he was a Celtics fan. My Hornets suck so much.

  135. @smartguy

hey im also a hornets fan, i knew i liked you for a reason

and if you are wondering, im an old charlotte hornets fan, thats why

  136. @Thundercracker

CP3 got me back to liking the NBA. For a long time I ignored it. The guy just has a good vibe about him. Fun to watch play.

I can't stand David West though. I call him D'Shitty. If I were an NBA coach, my gameplan would be to never guard him and let him take shots. he'll miss enough for you to win.

  137. its not that we are that bad, its that the western conference is just STACKED

we should just run 2 point guards, collison is also very good

  138. Yeah, I'm pretty impressed with Thornton as well. Consistent. I'm not sure if Collison is a long term guy though. They might dangle him to replace Posey. I think Peja will be traded next year.

  139. @ Smart Guy

I follow the Celtics (not as much as I should), its funny a lot of the players in the playoffs now passed through the Cetls at one point and time. And no not THAT Reggie (I was in the 5th grade when they lost to the Packers) I honestly don't remember what he looked like (the RW on the Pats).

    @ Thunder

Its ok man the first step is admittance. You do have a valid point about NE fans but I'm not one of the band wagon riders.

  140. ricky romero has a no hitter through 6 innings!!

exciting…because im a ricky romero owner

  141. BRANDON MARSHALL, FTW!!!! Wooooooooooooooooo!

Awesome! Now all we need is a good quarterback, some offensive linemen who can block, a nose tackle, a linebacker that can read offense, two corners and a good safety and we'll go to the Super Bowl for shizzle!

    -M

… oh yeah, and a long snapper and a kicker, too.

    That's it… I think.

  142. @iceman – good luck with Marshall. Honeslty he's been more trouble than he's worth in Denver but maybe he'll change his tune in Miami. Although, I don't think 50 million dollars is going to help lower that ego of his.

  143. @Shockwave

I know he had some issues but over 1000 receiving yards for the last 3 years straight makes him more than worth the trouble.

  144. 100 catches over the last 3 years…dude is the truth, im sorta pissed…good job bills front office!!

  145. @thundercracker

Just become a Saints fan. The Bills aren't doing any big moves until a new CBA is in place.

  146. @ Smartguy

The Saints ain't a dynasty yet, dude. You could end up in Tampa fan syndrome still.

The Bills made it to 4 Super Bowls (lost them all… but they still got there). That's still 4 times as many appearances in the big game. AND… six more until you get there as many times as the Steelers. Granted. you only have to win 5 of them to be as cool.

  147. Speaking about Tampa fans… true story:

One of my best friends that I grew up with ended up taking some classes the year Tampa happened to win the Super Bowl. This dude was a Pittsburgh native and his family totally rallied the Steelers like all other families in the fine city of Pittsburgh. However, i don't think my friend ever really caught on.

Anyway, he came back to Pittsburgh in the summer talking all kinds of smack about how great the Tampa Bucs were and how their day was at hand and the Steelers will never be and never were as good as Tampa was going to get…

Yeah, my same friend lives in China now.

  148. @n8r

was said friend banished by Ambassador Rooney, I wasn't aware that China and Ireland were close like that.

  149. @ Tokz

Nah… I think it was embarrassment tied in to the fact that he's making a killing over there in the import/export business.

    @ Big Blak

Nonsense. It's the AFC North i.e. the Steelers. How do I know? Because the football gods have me on speed dial. The only reason the Saints won last year is because the gods started drinking too early the day Troy got injured and EA put him on the cover of Madden because the videogame gods have been beefing with the football gods for some time now… this of course explains Blitz: The League and no new iterations of Tecmo Bowl.

  150. @N8R

doesn't matter. We accept all fans.

Don't see the TB syndrome setting in here.

  151. @SG

Sorry dude the Saints will make the playoffs but not to the big game and if I'm wrong I'll gladly eat my words (which are delicious and chocolaty).

    @N8

Let me correct my previous post, the champs are coming out of the AFC! Which team I honestly think on paper the Jets are looking like the best contenders.

  152. @ Smartguy

Steeler fan syndrome is something completely different. It's also contagious seeing as how we have the largest fanbase in the league.

Every major city in the States has a designated Steeler bar.

  153. @ Steeler Bars

  157. @ Big Blak

I noticed the very fitting name as well.

  158. Wow well I'm sure I can find a bigger list for your favorite team from Boston, the Red Sox lol.

  159. @n8r

It's only because of the soldiers stationed there. I'm sure there not many Iraqi-ans ( not sure about that word) that are die hard Steeler fans to have a bar out there.

  160. @BigBlak

I don't see your Pats or the Jets beating the Saints. If Favre doesn't come back then the Vikes chances go way down and the Cowboys will implode yet again. Atlanta and Carolina are the biggest hurdles. NFC SOUTH!

    @N8R

I have been to Cooter Brown's more than once, it most def is not a steeler's bar. If you looked up black and gold or whoever compiled that list used google then perhaps it is in error. The Saints are referred to as the black and gold. Steelers are black and yellow.

  161. @ tokz

Well, yeah. The predominantly Muslim population over there can't drink as it is. However it still gets me that someone was like "We need to have a Steeler bar over here. This Babylon sh*t just ain't cutting it."

  162. @ Smartguy

Things may have changed since the Saints grew a pair.

Sorry dude, we had the Black & Gold first. Y'all can be jealous and lie to yourself, hell try to push it as far across the internet as you can… you're still posers.

Also, the post-gazette has an official Steeler bar certificate they give out when places apply for it. That's how you get your name on that list. That said, Cooter's must have applied for it. Whether or not they adhere to it is a different matter. ( I only know this because I knew the owner of my local Steelers bar. At first, I had no idea he was a Steelers bar. I went there after hearing he was and said "I had no idea you were a Steeler bar" and he showed me the certificate and explained the process."

  163. @ Smartguy

Also, when the Chargers are doing well (I haven't been here long enough for the Raiders to do well). they'll play the Chargers game with sound on a bigger tv and have the Steeler game muted on a smaller tv.

That said, I'll bet Cooter's still shows the game, but the majority of patrons may or may not pay attention.

  164. @N8R

Not trolling here, just stating the fact that it's not a steeler's bar. They may have a Bradshaw memorabilia section, but he is from the state and there are lots of celebrity items in there. Never been to the other places on the list. I wouldn't doubt it though.

    Settle down black and yellow.

  165. @smartguy

Wow! If they trade him this will set them back tremendously. I heard Mike and Mike mention it but Chris Mortensen shot them down.

  166. @ SG

The Pats aren't winning squat without an improved defense. The Pats lit up the score board a few seasons ago and the next season every team had an answer for it, the same will happen to the Saints. The Saint are a really good team but they are not a lock for a repeat.

  167. @BigBlak

Last 4 years they have been either 1 or 2 in the league in offense. Brees doesn't discriminate. Brady just looks to Welker and Moss. All things come to an end, but Brees will have at least 2 rings.

  168. @ Smartguy

Sorry dude, I'm just saying we were Black and Gold first, Black and Bronze. I don't b;ame you guys for trying to say that bronze was gold first though. I blame the 49ers from when they tried to pose as the Redskins (who started in Boston I'd like to say).

We've been Black and Gold for over 75 years, dude. All your trying to do is change the definition of the color gold to something that looks more bronze.

    @ the link

I'm actually not surprised. If he screws up again I can totally see it. A strange fact about the Steelers though, how many players have we had that were great for us but other teams couldn't work with? There's a good chance Ben is one of those players. We'll have to see though.

I actually have more faith in our office than any one member of the team. Last year was bad because we built our defense around Troy. Even then, we still almost made the playoffs. If Cinci or NE would have won the last week of the season, we'd have been in.

  169. @N8R

Just ribbing you dude. People call LSU the Purple and Gold when their pants are as yellow as the Steelers. A weird convention how people label that stuff.

I think Rooney will get rid of him. For the normal and public reasons that are easy to speculate…but I also think Rooney is trying to one up Goodell. I don't doubt that Rooney is a great guy, he seems so, but I think he is trying to show Goodell that he is just as influential and that the owners run the NFL, not the commish. Hence him getting the Rooney rule implemented.

In a twisted way, I hope he is indeed hoping the suspension is protracted or doesn't come down…it will be easier to get rid of him.

I could also see an outright cut. I really can. Ben hurts the image that organization worked hard to make.

  170. @N8R

They need a willing partner to trade…just can't force this on someone. (PUN INTENDED)

  171. @smartguy

Ha! I was hearing a scenario where they would trade with STL Rams for obviously the #1 this year and probably some other pick or a backup qb. Charlie Batch just doesn't stay healthy.

  172. @ Smartguy

There's complications that start with the fact that Ben is a QB that won 2 rings for the organization. It's not as easy to push him off the roster as it was for Santonio. Ben is contracted to 4 or 5 more years for big money, someone else would have to pick up that bill. That's complication 1.

Complication 2, is that teams rely more on QB's than they do… oh let's say a receiver that gets in too much trouble (*cough* Santonio *cough* Plaxico Buress). The team could suffer greatly. Granted, we sell out every game and already have sold out every game for the next 20 years (if you order season tickets for the Steelers right now, you'll go to your first game in 2025 to 2030… no joke) so it's not a money thing as much as it is a team morale thing. It's really questionable as to how the team would respond.

And yes, Art Rooney is a great man.

Ben said his meeting with Goodell was "very productive:
    http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/10103/1050101-66.s

    Ben joined the Steeler workout:
    http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/10104/1050327-66.s

Goodell is doing his own investigation as we speak:
    http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/10104/1050327-66.s

and this link is unrelated, but cool:

  173. @Tokz

They have that Dixon guy. He didn't play bad. Improvised like BIg Rape. You ever seen Blazing Saddles? If so this will make sense.

How Big Ben's discussions with other team's GMs will go:

    Hedley: Qualifications?

Big Ben: Rape, tough to sack, strong arm and rape.

    Hedley: You said rape twice.

    Big Ben: I like rape.

  174. @ tokz

We still have Dennis Dixon too. I think he showed up for the game he played last year, he wasn't horrible.

    He's definitely no Tommy Maddox.

  175. @ Smartguy

It's not like Reggie Bush doesn't have any sexual improprieties. The difference is…

Reggie is DEFINITELY guilty for the world to see.

  176. @smartguy

a blazing saddles reference! Awesome! This post reeks of awesomeness!

    @n8r

    tommy maddox! Ha!

  177. We can just keep this post going, any other conversations to get going to keep this post going to a monumental status.

  178. Other topic that has interested me lately…

Pepsi and Mountain Dew Throwback… awesome stuff.

  179. I would love to talk about O.J. We know that guy got away with murder. you figure that guy would've kept his nose clean afterwards and what does he do? Try to rob some of his memorabilia back! It's like come on dude, seriously? You know the law is just trying to find a way to keep you locked away now.

  180. Yeah I am a fan of the mountain dew throwback, it has been a while since I have had one though. I am more of a coke person over pepsi though.

  181. @ New developments in Big Ben case

    http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/10105/1050768-66.s

He;s a few weeks away from DEFINITELY being disciplined… but not traded. Ben is willing to accept the consequences.

The hitch is with the NFLPA. Apparently they would have an easier time appealing the discipline if Rooney instated it than if Goodell did. That said, they're waiting on Goodell's decision before further action.

    (in a nutshell).

  182. @ Tokz

Actually, OJ hired the best forensic examiners in the country (likely the world: Michael Badin and Henry Lee) immediately after the incident and before the police started their investigation of OJ. What they found implicated at least 2 people were involved. Before they could get further, the police threw them off the scene and continued to contaminate and destroy the evidence in an effort to pin it on OJ.

I saw an interview with Badin about it that totally changed my perspective on the whole thing.

As for stealing his stuff back… I'm not saying he should have did it… but I can understand. That's the streets side of me talking though.

  183. @n8r

I've always been a fan of the O.J. he was a great RB but not as great as Jim Brown or Walter Payton. I understand it too. He did it for the same reason Bernard Hopkins beat up some guy over $40.00 some years back. O.J.'s keeping it "real" went wrong.

  184. @N8R

    Bush is awesome.

I think he is out of Pittsburgh. Rooney has that ambassador gig, can't have a high profile alleged raper in the offseason in his employ.

  185. @OJ

He beat a broken system. Police are to under budgeted to make any kind of real investigation, leaving most cases with little to no real evidence. The way the case was set up, he was supposed to come out guilty, but obviously he got the right people to disclaim the poor evidence used against him. I won't pass judgment on OJ as the no real evidence was collect to prove his guilt or innocence.

  186. @ Smartguy

He's out if he screws up again, he's probably out. But this is a direct quote from Rooney that he made during a press conference today while we were trolling about it on the internetz:

we intend to allow Ben the opportunity to prove to us he is the teammate and citizen we all believe he is capable of being."

"And we hope the entire Steelers community will allow Ben the opportunity to prove to them that he deserves their trust and their respect"

To me, that sounds like he's staying.

    @ Sandrock

The real evidence (that was left) was deemed inadmissible with the rest of the contaminated crime scene. Even though this evidence was taken before the contamination, it didn't matter according to the statute.

The OJ trial set new standards for the way police collect evidence since then. Before this historical incident, it wasn't a matter of budget, it was a matter of ignorance.

  187. @ Tokz

Yea he tried to hard to keep it real lol

    @ Been Rapingservers

Its such a big deal because its number 2 in 1 year. I was really into this case a few days ago but now I'm kind of sick of it.

  188. @ Big Blak

Didn't Tom Brady dump his pregnant girl to hook up with a supermodel?

And didn't he get suspended because that pregnant girl reported his steroid use?

  189. @ Sandrock;

I just like to think that his laywer was a slick-talking SOB. If you have that on your side, evidence be damnned.

    -M

  190. @ Big Blak

    Thanks (I guess)

You're lucky I'm from the East Coast and I realize that "f**k you" means the same as "you kick ass" over there. People get butthurt on the west coast VERY easily over STUPID stuff.

  191. @Big Blak

I'm sick of Ben Rapingfurburgers too. Why won't people let it go???? He's not being charged he doesn't have to answer to you. He just has to answers to his employers, NLPA president and the commish. They are over doing this just like Tiger's story. I boycotted the Master's because of the media.

  192. @ tokz

I'm not watching the Master's this year because golf is the most boring sport on the planet to watch.

In fact, it's the same reason I never watched the Master's.

  193. @ N8R

I had no idea about that (Brady) lol what a douche and when did he get suspended? We have the best slang in the world on the East Coast of the good ol' U S of A!!!

    @ tokz

I watched some of it mostly to see how the public was going to react to Tiger.

  194. wow im not gonna read all this

im gonna start calling roethlisberger "hand banana"

    "tonight…you"

  195. Dude I don’t care what anyone says AFC East is birthing the next Super Bowl winners.

  196. @ Big Blak

You apparently can't see the new one yet… it happens.

It says "Fox News made me do it".

  197. @Big Blak

Why is Jay-Z hating on David Ortiz? His is called Forty/Forty club because he plays baseball and because at one time he did get 40 HRs and 40 SBs. Not everyone wants to make money off you, Jay-Z. Doesn't he have enough money already?? Why only sue Ortiz for $5 million why doesn't Jay-Z just take him for everything he's got if he feels that the forty/forty club will make so much money in the Dominican using his club's name of 40/40. complete ahole that guy is.

  198. @ Jay-Z lawsuit

Does he even have a case? If he trademarked the name, isn't that only valid in America?

He's got 99 problems, and one of the is apparently in the Dominican Republic.

  199. @n8r

    haha!

    @Sandrock

He has enough money! He has his own record label, his own clothing line, a fragrance collection ( i think), night clubs and probably some more shyte. I'm boycotting Jay-Z and if i ever go to the Dominican and David Ortiz still has his club I'm speding most of my money & time there.

  200. @Big Blak

What a bad picture for Tiger to take in retrospect. Now he's linked to a sexual predator.

  201. @N8R

if both names were spelled the same way and the countries had reciprocity then it would be an issue. Creating a lawsuit and making the lawyer work for the retainer was cheaper advertisement.

Jay-Z is a Yankees fan to lol.

I should watch MSN so my leg will tingle.

  202. @ Tokz

Wow dude and they say the American youth are f**cked up. It takes a lot more to smash someones face in than to pull a trigger.

  203. @smartguy

Ortiz's club has forty/forty and Jay-Z's has 40/40. The difference is numbers and words.

    @Big Blak

agreed, especially for someone that raised you and you should have a close bond with.

    Almost to #300!

  204. @ N8R

He just wanted to spread the drug (get it, instead of love I used drug *hangs head in shame*). All jokes aside that is really really bugged out that some one wrote trust me on the baggies.

  205. @n8r

that is a f**ked up story but the kid didn't know better. Some disturbed guy probably gave it to him.

I should get a prize for stumbling into the #300 comment.

  206. @tokz

yes I know. I was just telling N8R how it could clash.

Since his club isn't a chain, he's kind of stuck. By national I mean I open a Whall-Mart and WalMart sues me lol.

  207. @ Big Blak

Yeah it is. Granted, Wilkinsburg PA (a bordering suburb of the city of Pittsburgh) is a pretty f**ked up place.

It used to be a wealthy neighborhood up until the 50's or so… now it's GHETTO to all hell. I myself was robbed at gunpoint delivering a pizza there.

One day, I had a job delivering flowers. I was thinking about going to McDonald's and grabbing something to eat, but I decided to swing by my parents house a few blocks away instead and eat for free. I left my parents house and went to the Wholesale Flower Warehouse that was a few blocks from the McDonald's in the other direction.

As I get there, SWAT vans and police of all sorts are flying down the street. I start asking around to find out that some guy was pissed at his landlord so he walked 8 blocks and shot every white person he saw along the way. Mc Donald's was on the path and he shot everyone in the Drive thru as well as everyone inside and the employees.

He killed like 33 people that day.

  208. @ N8

Yo I remember that. Thank (insert your supernatural being here) for family and free meals, holy shit dude thats NUCKIN FUTZ!!!!!

  209. Not far from Memphis there were two men handing out meth crystals to elementary students. A Memphis two police officers beat the crap out of a trany in the middle of a police station. A crime stoppers phone rep called a man wanted for murder and told him to move because someone just phoned in his current hide out. I could go on and on…

  210. @ Tokz

So HDTVs can emmit cancer causing radiation and now 3Dtv can potentially ruin your eyesight. 3DHDTV is gonna be bananas!!!

  211. @ All

Apparently. we talked so much about Ben Roethlisberger in this thread, that the Amazon search box widget is now displaying all Steelers items.

    That rocks!

  212. @sandrock

    Ha!

    @n8r

I dont' see anything Steeler related. I still see random things.

    @Big Blak

you would actually wear something Steeler related, turn in your Patriots fan card please.

  213. @Big Blak

hmmmm, we're going to have to suspend your Patriots fan card at least. You can have it back on Thursday night.

  214. @RPAD

Hahaha but it has to be the super slow start up just cause. Oh yea thanks for the magnet!

  215. @Big Blak

We'll let Rpad decide on your suspension on your fan card. on the 5 y/o kid there's no way that kid hit an 85 mph pitch. I never saw anything that acknowledged that speed. It's also hard to take this video seriously when they can't spell player right. if you look at min 1:21 of the vid it says Baseball Blayer. I rewinded 3 times to make sure.

  216. @ Tokz

Really im going to watch that again

    @RPAD

So N8R post #319 prompted me to ask for free stuff, now why can't a Pats fan get free stuff from an opposing team? Key word FREE!!!
