Coffee Talk #78: Your Game Developer Dream Date

I’ve “known” a lot of you long enough that I have a pretty good idea of what games you like and don’t like. However, I’m not so sure about your favorite game designers and developers. So let’s play a game! If you could have dinner with one famous game designer, who would it be and why? What questions would you ask him or her?

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames,the season premiere of Lost, if Adrien Grenier should change his name to Vincent Chase, or why pinch-to-zoom is a must-have feature, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

I’ve “known” a lot of you long enough that I have a pretty good idea of what games you like and don’t like. However, I’m not so sure about your favorite game designers and developers. So let’s play a game! If you could have dinner with one famous game designer, who would it be and why? What questions would you ask him or her?

As for me, it would be Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto. I’ve had one-on-one interviews with him in the past, but that was in the late ’90s. My recent encounters with the legend have been in group settings. I want more! I’d love to hang out with Miyamoto over a slow dinner, followed by dessert and coffee. I’d love to pick his brain, to see how he gets his amazing ideas. I’d even enjoy observing his use of ordinary objects like a fork or a coffee cup. His perspective is just so different. Remember, this is the guy that came up with Nintendogs and Pikmin after getting a pet and taking up gardening, respectively. Maybe he could come up with a marvelously entertaining game base on my morning ritual of grinding beans and making coffee in a French press.

So yeah! Who is your developer dream date? In addition to who it would be and what questions you’d ask, let everyone know what the setting would be. Also, I reserve the right to punch anyone that selects Cliffy B (I’m kidding. He’s awesome!).

  1. Sorry but a date is to much for me. I would however like to go over to Bungie and hang out with them for the day. They have some good personalities from what I can tell.

    @R-Pad

    I thought for sure you would have picked a double date with the Dr. over at Bioware. Hell, I'd have been your wingman if that was the case.

  2. I would have to go with Miyamoto. I've been playing his games for so long. There would be soo many questions i would ask. but here are a few:

    Starfox for the Wii, is it going to happen? I keep hearing yes or no? I'm a big fan especially of the N64 version, you would imagine with the wii controls a flight game like Starfox would be made.

    Does he ever see an end to the Zelda or Super Mario franchises? If so how would he imagine ending them?

    That's all i have for now. As for Adrien Green, yes please change your name. I don't forsee him being anyone else but Vincent. I keep forgetting he's been in other things like the Devil Wears Prada. i would like to point out that i saw said movie just to see Anne Hathaway.

    As for Lost, what a way to start Season 6!

    Lastly, pinch and zoom is a god send for me because i need to zoom in and read as the font provided on the safari browser is still too small even in landscape mode.

  3. I'd go out for beers and wings with the Houser guys. I think they are the ones who do GTA. Their writing is great and I'm sure it would be a fun time. Maybe Levine could come by and enjoy a few rounds. I think his games have great style.

    Optimally I'd choose to have everyone over at a crawfish boil. Lots of food and at least two kegs.

  4. @Sandrock323 I actually get to see them a few times a year. They're fantastic people.

    @tokz_21 It's a good movie! Plus, Anne Hathaway is ridiculously hot.

    @Anyone I didn't bother to watch Lost. Someone please spoilarz it for me.

  5. @smartguy

    your mysterious cajun food frightens me

    i would NEVER eat a crawfish

    id rather be locked in a room….just me and a television, with Undercover brother playing perpetually in a loop

  6. @Rpad

    Yes, she is hot in that movie. She's the only reason i don't mind seeing rom-com's. Too bad our paths will never cross. Also, you want us to spoil Lost for you?? Are you sure what you're asking for? Please tell me you at least plan on seeing it sometime soon. As some of the things revealed can be confusing, even though you did see it or hear it.

  7. @tokz_21 I will watch it at some point, but I don't care enough to make a big effort. I have the same opinion of Matthew Fox as Seth Rogen's character in Knocked Up.

  8. @thundercracker

    you'd love a crawfish boil. Trust me.

    Spicy boiled potatoes, corn, sausage, garlic, mushrooms, etc and tasty crawfish. Just pinch the tails since it would be your first time, you can suck the heads later lol.

    I'm sure you'd enjoy the beer and music.

  9. @rpad

    well to avoid having my head rolled by N8R, as soon as he says he's seen it. we'll be all over Lost.

  10. @Ray SPOILER

    Locke is the black smoke. He killed the people carrying the metal case with Locke's body in it. There seems to be a parallel universe where the plane never crashed. I also think that Jack remembers everything in that universe. Notably he seemed to know about the heroin, who Desmond was, and thinks ge can fix paralyzed Locke.

  11. @rpad

    I can't wait to see how that works out! It will be better than my clark kent costume idea.

    @nightshade

    *crap* i forgot all about her. she's a hottie. Out of sight out of mind sometimes for me.

    @smartguy

    Are we still waiting for n8r to start the Lost conversation?

  12. @smartguy

    theory time I think the real Locke is not dead

    @anybody who cares what is this so called alternative reality?

  13. @redtailman

    I think it will be best to call them the following:

    Lost – the timeline we know since 2004, including time on/off the island and time jumps

    Lost A – the timeline now created by detonating Jughead to stop the incident. (shout out to Back to the Future on this one. I couldn't stop thinking about it when they showed us this last nite.)

  14. @Rpad

    Haha. I'm all for going with a DC comics theme but maybe like The Island – Prime and The-Island-2?

  15. @Tokz

    Sure, N8R wouldn't have missed it last night.

    @Redtailman

    Why do you think he isn't dead?

    More theories: I can't decide if Jack, Sayid or Hugo will replace Jacob. I'm pretty sure Linus will be the new black smoke when all is said and done.

    What the hell is up with Richard Alpert? Are they ever going to explain why he never ages?

  16. @rpad

    haha. You're just full of comedy gold this morning! but you may be on to something.

    @smartguy

    I think that maybe Lapitas (sp?) Ilana seems to think he's a perfect candidate. She seemed pretty close to Jacob and would know more than everyone else. Yes i need an explanation for Richard as well but i'm sure that will come in time but hopefully next week since evil-Locke was last seen hauling him away.

    @redtailman

    Island-Prime Locke is dead. Dead is dead, unless you are baptized in the spring of life like Sayid was.

  17. @smartguy

    I don't think he will replace Jacob. I think it's a whole re-incarnation thing. The whole your body may be dead but your soul/spirit is always out there and just waiting to inhabit another vessel or body. Ilana chose to keep Lapitas alive because she said he is a candidate. this is the theory i'm going with.

  18. @smartguy

    I can't pinpoint what role sayid is playing right now. He was saved from dying by being dipped or drowned in the murky spring of life. It could be that he's a temporary vessel for Jacob until the spring is restored to it's cleanliness wherein Lapitas maybe the permanent one.

    @redtailman

    thank you for agreeing with my theory. My head has been spinning and hurting with all the different angles this could go. As far as Cindy goes, i always wondered why the entire plane crew didn't survive but i guess Cindy did and she is an Other "Other"?? I don't think she turned i'm going to say she's always been one. It's been shown that Jacob's always had people working in his name (OMG that sounds so religious/cult like) outside of the island,example: Ilana and Bram abducting Miles. So, cindy probably knew the plane on Island-Prime was going to crash on the island but needed to be there to make sure the 6 people he visited in the Season 5 finale "The Incident Part 1 & 2" were on the plane.

  19. @ Smartguy

    I don't think Jack remembers everything. He recognized Desmond from the jogging up and down the stairs of the stadium thing but couldn't place him. Of course he knows what heroin is. Besides, Sayid was the one who really recognized it.

    @ tokz

    My wife also thinks that Sayid is Jacob.

    @ in general

    Where's Eko? I was pissed when he died.

    I think the parallel universe thing is actually what's going to happen (a real reset) once whatever they are doing in the "Jacob's dead" storyline is completed. Kind of like beginning with the end.

  20. @N8R

    he knew who Desmond was. He was surprised to see him on the plane since he is supposed to be in the hatch. His convo with Rose was also different.

    I wonder what Miles knows since he was next to "dead" Sayid.

  21. @ Smartguy

    A bunch of things were different. Hurley was the luckiest guy in the world, Shannon stayed in Australia (probably because they couldn't get the actress back), Locke apparently actually went on the walkabout, the coffin and Locke's knives never made the plane, we didn't see Michael, Walt, or Vincent… a bunch of things.

    He didn't seemed surprised to me. He seemed like he was staring at him because he recognized him from a short event that happened 3 years earlier but couldn't place him.

    Who knows though? It's Lost, right?

  22. @n8r

    I'm sure Ecko's time will come. I'm interested to see how they're going to spin his storyline. I mean does he still become a drug lord? Does his brother still take his place on the plane? where does he end up? Why did smokey kill him?

    @smartguy

    I'm siding with n8r on this one. I'm thinking that this may fall under the deja vu category. It's something i started thinking of recently. It's like Jack recognized him but didn't know from where. He also got that moment when talking to Rose.

  23. @ tokz & Smartguy

    Jogging… up and down the stairs of the stadium in the one flashback. The same place Desmond recognized Jack from when they first met in the hatch and Desmond said "I know you".

    That's where Jack recognized him from.

    BUT…. if a reset happened in said parallel universe, Charles Widmore died on the island, Penny was never born, and Desmond would have no reason to be there in the first place. Unless similar events still played out with a different woman in the role of Penny. Either way, the race around the world thing wouldn't have been prevalent and Desmond probably wouldn't have been training for it in LA.

  24. @N8R

    I was thinking their first meeting but remembered that this is island-2, time. What if Widmore had died from the island sinking? Penny, not existing, basically what you mentioned in your last paragraph. There a lot of things that can be affected in thie island-2 universe. I'm sticking with my deja vu theory on Jack.

  25. I think Jack remembers what happened. I'm willing to bet Desmond is married to that other chick.

    Question: why are Kate and Sawyer seemingly the same? Maybe Sawyer never killed that guy. I don't know about annoying white trash Kate.

  26. another question, what happened to Rose and her husband? Did they die or did they make it through the time shift as well?

  27. @smartguy

    I second your thoughts on Kate. It seems like her character hasn't changed at all even with the reset. As for Sawyer it looks like he's the same con-man extraordinaire he's always been. I saw his face light up when he overheard Hurley saying he won the lottery. I always like i want to see how he cons Hurley out of some money.

    @n8r

    yes the two storylines puzzles me too and maybe they are working backwards on island-2 and show us that the actions from island-prime will lead to the reward in island-2. I look forward to sharing/discussing/arguing more last theories until the finale on 5/23/10. It's the rumored date Jimmy Kimmel announced last nite.

  28. @redtailman

    It's hard to speculate on what happens to Rose and Benard on island-prime, especially with 1977 being the last time we saw them. We can assume they did die and probably are the Adam and Eve skeletons found in the cave in season 1. I'm thinking they probably wont answer this question on the show. I don't think they're going to show us more 1977 now that the we are dealing with two timelines. it would be way too confusing.

  29. @my comment 41

    I meant Lost theories not last. Also thank you @redtailman for confirming that date of 5/23. It will be one of the few Sundays that I will be home since spring will be in full swing by then.

  30. I second that question. it seems that no matter what island timeline you're looking at the statue is always broken down to that one foot. also for my previous correction on comment 43 i meant comment 40 not 41.

  31. @ tokz

    I just watched the intro again to see if it was the same foot under the water and it is. What I noticed was (besides from people hairstyles being different from Season 1) is that when Cindy the stewardess hands Jack the drink after him complaining about the strength, she only hands him 1 bottle instead of 2. I remember that because when Kate stitched him up, he had the 2 bottles, 1 for him, and one to pour on the wound.

    It probably means nothing, but I noticed it.

  32. @rpad

    ahaha. I'm not even going to ask how you knew that. I didn't watch Speed Racer as i didn't feel a need for a real-life adaptation of my favorite cartoon while growing up. I'm sure it was a combined effort of suck-titude to cause that movie to fail. not just Matthew Fox.

  33. @Nightshade;

    I'm with you, man. I've never seen an episode of Lost. I like J.J. Abrams for what he did with Star Trek, though. I think that the only shows I watch regularly is The Daily Show, Colbert Report, Simpsons, Family Guy and The Dog Whisperer… which is pretty unusual considering I don't even have a dog.

    @ topic;

    Wow, Mr. Padilla, you make it sound so romantic. Too bad more developers aren't smoking hot chicks. I think I would like to pick either Cliff Bleszinski (*dodges punch to the face), or Tim Schafer. I can't decide between which one, though. They just seem like people that I could get along with and be friends with. That would be hard with Miyamoto since I don't speak Japanese. His English is not the easiest thing to listen to, either.

    Oh, yeah, and I would also like to have dinner with Sergey Titov and pour arsenic in his drink when he gets up to go to the bathroom. You may know him as the lead programmer for Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing. I would first like to ask him a few questions before his dirt nap.

    -M

  34. @tokz_21 I actually enjoyed the movie. It wasn't great,but it was good, dumb fun for me. I think it got unfairly blasted because Hollywood doesn't dig Larry Wachowski's transgender lifestyle.

    @Iceman Cliff and Tim are both excellent people

  35. @rpad.

    Fine i will give Speed Racer a shot but i will hold you responsible if i am not amused.

    @nightshade

    It depends on which group you're talking about. if you're talking about the main group of characters then it's like 108 days. or 3 years for locke and the rest that didn't leave. I think he doesn't lose weight because he stress eats plus he also left the island.

  36. Good theory on the skeletons in the cave. Could easily be Bernard and Rose. Though it isn't close to the beach that they liked.

  37. @Nightshade

    I understand your frustrations and they would be true on a deserted island…however LOST occurs on an island that has inhabitants and plenty of food. Also, there wasn't very much work involved in building shelters since they use lean-tos mostly.

    My biggest gripe is how come nobody ever has to shave???

  38. @Smartguy: I don't actually care enough to be frustrated. I'm bored out of my mind at work and this was the ONLY conversation going on in here. And I had nothing to really add to the conversation.

  39. @Nightshade

    I'm wondering how nobody shaves or grows hair really? Haha.

    Time to watch Blazing Saddles. Taggert is the best character.

  40. @ Smartguy

    The island heals you of unsightly blemishes and dandruff.

    I think I remember Locke and Jack shaving… and Michael got pretty scruffy looking.

  41. If I weren’t married and could actually make a date of it? Jade Raymond…..for the obvious reasons.

    But from a purely “gaming” perspective, I’d have to pick the good Dr’s at Bioware.

  42. @ Smartguy

    There were razors in the hatch and Sawyer probably stashed a few from the plane.

    @ R Pad

    The only guy that could fish without a rod was Jin.

  43. @tokz

    interesting. Perhaps a candidate to replace Alpert. Also she is the one who drug Sayid on the plane and Jacob had Sayid saved. Interesting.

  44. The truth is:

    I have no idea why they are going with the 2 storylines. I’m sure it will all be revealed to us and there is a good chance of continuity errors aplenty.

    One thing I know:

    We can argue over theories for the whole season, but there’s a great chance we’re all wrong. That’s the way it’s been for 6 years now.

  45. @topic. Late as usual. But I would not be late for a dinner with John Romero and John Carmack. I've mentioned them a couple times in the past, but I would actually love to play games with them. See what games they are playing now, how they fare in Doom, what systems they like the most, etc. The food could be as basic as whatever they eat when they are on a gaming binge, for me that has been poptarts and green tea lately. Just to watch them function in the environments they prefer.

    Miyamoto is a close second, as I have played many of his games and love them all. But I have to

    go with the guys at id software, with them being the inventors of my favorite genre of games…what I would give to meet them and have this day actually happen……..
