Netflix Coming to Wii in Spring 2010

Nintendo has announced that the Netflix movie service will be available for its Wii console this spring. Already available on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 systems, the streaming movie service has been one of the most popular non-gaming features on consoles. Now it will be available on the most popular console in the world. Today’s press release stated:

Netflix is scheduled to go live on the Wii console this spring in the United States at no additional cost to Netflix members who have a plan starting at $8.99 a month, a Wii console and a broadband Internet connection.

I’m curious to see how Netflix will do on the Wii. Obviously the installed base is enormous, but I wonder how many casual gamers even have their systems connected to the Internet. For enthusiasts gamers that have multiple consoles, there’s no reason to use the service on the visually challenged (but environmentally friendly *snicker*) console; they’d be better of using the PS3 or Xbox 360 for a superior image. I’m sure Netflix will do well on the system, but I’m not sure how well.

Any thoughts on the matter?

  1. A lot of the people I know with a Wii still don't get on the internet with a computer let alone a console. I have 1 friend with a Wii that regularly gets online with so we can buy old games. Got F-Zero the other day.

  2. I yell at my mom all the time for not having her Wii online. She and my brother are just to inept to setup a wireless network. They have the router… they just can't figure it out.

My father happens to be one of those people. I make fun of him all the time. He was the first person I knew with internet a long time ago. All I remember about the internet back then was it sucked. You had to know where you were going because there weren't search engines that we knew of. He hasn't had internet since then and I think that was the early 90s.

  4. my girlfriend was just talking about renewing the netflix for winter but after the WB deal I've decided against it

  5. A few people I used to work with (women) wouldn't put their Wiis on the internet (there's a joke in there) because they didnt want their children talking and playing with strangers. They also would only let the kids play their Wii with parental supervision. One of them actually told me that they would sit with the remote and if they thought something objectionable came about in any game, they'd turn the tv off.

I'm sure those kids are going to grow up to use drugs, become a bunch of emos, or just plain have their asses kicked. I feel sorry for them.

I'm considering canceling before the next cycle as well. My girlfriend is telling me it's no big deal, but I'm hard headed and it's the principle of the thing!

Then again, she could cancel my subscription to other things…hmm.

  7. @smartguy – lol, I agree. typically I'd let the account go inactive over the summer and fall but we watch more movies in the winter. It's a lot easier just to not renew it.

My Wii is online and I have a 7 year old and a 4 year old who play the thing alot. I have the code set up so they can't get online without asking me. I almost always say yes.

I don't let them use the internet channel without supervision because there's absolutely no filter. The first day I put on the internet channel, of course the first thing I thought was "Can I use this for pron". The answer was a resounding "Yes". I didn't find a site I knew about that it couldn't handle.

Usually, they're more interested in Pokemon Ranch though… for now.

You are a dude. You think rationally. Women on this site will hate me now.

Speaking of irrational women, every single woman on LOST is totally irrational. I seriously despise the Kate character. I see myself on the island as the woman shaker. I couldn't deal with that crap.

That last bit came out of nowhere.

I just posted a comment about :ost in the other thread… great minds, dude!

Male screenwriters have a tendency to write horrible roles for women. It's an on going drama in Hollywood.

Still, I can't wait for the last season. That's easily one of my favorite shows of all time. That, Red Dwarf, (put Red Dwarf in your queue and let me know what you think), and I particularly like Heroes (Hiro speaking in fan fiction for the last 3 episodes was great).

I'm going to finish the last episode of Season 3 tonight or tomorrow and then move on to season 4 via netflix. It's not a bad show, I think the narrative drops at times, but not a bad show at all.

I will also have Dexter season 4 in my hands by Friday. I will veg out to that show this weekend if possible. I can't wait.

  12. @ Smartguy

Lost: Season 4 had just ended when I got on to ABC.com and watched the whole thing. I couldn't get away from it. It totally sucked me in. I think they jump the narrative around to keep you asking questions.

@ Dexter 4: Better than season 3. Lithgow FTW!

  13. @ Smartguy

I see myself as the dude on the island trying to bone every chick on the island. Jin and Sawyer's like the only dudes the get some. I'd be thinking "We're probably gonna die here. I'll more than likely never see my wife again, so what happens on the island, stays on the island."

That's pretty rational if you ask me.

  14. @ addition to #16

ESPECIALLY if I was Locke. I'd be like "My legs are healed… I CAN WALK… AND F**K! I need to stick my d**k in something ASAP!"

  15. Locke got to rock on top (thankyou Ladies Man) of Peg Bundy for a good while. The others probably don't compare lol.

  16. Thank you, Netflix. My gf has a wii but doesn’t have cable. She mostly streams everything on tv but is out of it when it comes to movies. I have to unplug my xbox360 everytime i go see her. now i don’t have to.
Also, now i can finally move my ps3 from my family’s living room to my room. My family was using that to stream movies too.
