Coffee Talk #27: What Are Your Next-Gen Console Dreams?

Post image of Coffee Talk #27: What Are Your Next-Gen Console Dreams?

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, that tool in the Final Fantasy XIII release date announcement video, “Rowdy” Roddy Piper’s return to MSG, or helping me find a new coffee company (part II), Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

There are certain things you can expect each console generation — better graphics, enhanced sound, less money in your bank account, etc. Every now and then, a key feature is introduced that takes consoles to a new level. It seems quaint now, but the inclusion of DVD in the PlayStation 2 was huge — it turned consoles into devices for movies and games. Microsoft revolutionized online console gaming with Xbox Live. Today’s machines stream movies, browse the web, allow for social networking, and more. While this generation is still going strong and still has several years to go, it’s always fun to think about what’s next.

Tivo Gets Me

A few months ago, I wrote about my next-gen console dream: TiVo integration. Consoles are already capable computing machines with hard drives, so adding TiVo to the mix would be a snap. I’d love for one of the “big three” (I don’t care which one) to license TiVo software for their next console. If Microsoft, Nintendo, or Sony announced a partnership with TiVo, I’d cry tears of joy.

I wanted to ask you what your dream features are for the PlayStation 4, Wii 2, and Xbox 720. Do you want more online functionality? Perhaps one-button pizza ordering? A wave motion cannon? Leave a comment and let me know (please)!

1. DVR functionality
2. Choice between disc or digital download (excluding arcade titles)
3. Built in wireless (MS)
4. Keyboard and mouse support for titles (usb plugs, not proprietary)
5. Debut under $400

I’ve always been a fan of customization. I’d like to be able to tweak the characters in my games to look how I want them to look in all aspects. I want to put my face on Niko Bellic or Nathan Drake. Stuff like that.

I’d like to see motion controls take a backseat to reading my thoughts. That way, the soundtrack to the game I’m playing could be the song stuck in my head… which wouldn’t always be a good thing… but still cool.

A toaster oven integration would be nice… and something that makes going to the bathroom less distracting from the game. I’m sick of wearing Depends while I’m gaming (joke).

I want MMO’s to be even more expansive and immersible. I truly would like to step into new universes.

Other than that, this might do the trick:

Maybe the song stuck in my head is a horrendous idea. Right now, The Pina Colda song would be on a perpetual loop with half the words being mumbled.

“If you like Pina Coladas…. and getting caught in the rain.
Bum bum bum bum, bum bum bum bum”

God forbid I would ever hear Who Let The Dogs Out ever again. (Now you all have that stuck in your heads…ha… ha)

The Wii 2 needs to have more affordable cheaply made games, I am just not really seeing this market being filled. Also they need to make some kind of plastic peripheral that the controller snaps into but won’t really add anything to the game.

The PS4 needs to slow down the time it takes to update the games and the console because sometimes I don’t feel like actually playing the game online right when I turn my console on. Sometimes my internet connection starts to feel lonely and Needs a 138mb patch downloaded over the next 4 hours.

The Xbox720 accessories have become too affordable and I don’t feel like I am getting quality products anymore because I am not paying enough for them. MS needs to be more realistic about their pricing models on those huge hard drives and wifi adapters. I mean really the general public knows that a lot of time and effort went into putting the newest technology and the largest harddrives into those plastic enclosures and that this new thing called WiFi has yet to take off and MS is make a huge investment by taking a chance with it so why not charge even more for it. Also I am glad I can’t just go around and easily stick any old hard drive into my 360, my console is monogamous to MS. And I am glad I can’t use the internet on my 360 also, no porn on my machine.

Other than those few minor things I can’t tell the future and the next console gen is far enough off we will probably all be wrong.

DVR functionality would be awesome. I guess keyboard functionality for some games would be good as someone mentioned but wouldn’t work in FPS unless you want keyboard/mouse people to have a staggering advantage over controllers. I’m thinking more RTS but again in MP it doesn’t really work.

HDD wise I’d like to see large hard drives as well. there’s no reason each console shouldn’t be able to handle all of my music, movies, TV, and photos in addition to DVR functionality. I’d also like to see more video playback options from the next PS. it doesn’t currently support most of my video encoding (that’s a simple media software update)

I’d like to see MS move to Bluetooth but I’d rather keep the batteries on the outside of the
controller as is. I’d also like to see a redesigned option for the next PS controller or the ability to interchange any bluetooth controller for both consoles.

MS, wireless network support should be built in and please drop the proprietary HDD.

game wise I would like to see scenery play more of a part in games, such as more destructible environments in the next gen, a lot of games this gen are really pretty but it’s a pretty that you can see and not necessarily touch. immersion can disappear quickly when you toss a grenade on a table and nothing happens. I’ve been really impressed with physics, shadows and lighting this gen and can only hope for more next time around.

@slicky – good point about the next PS. they’ve got to lower the time it takes to download updates and install, they could take a lesson from the 10 second XBL game updates that are optional if you don’t want to play online that day.

also peer to peer download should be out the window. it took me a whole day to download the MGS MP demo which I played for about 30 minutes

Yeah, well, the only think missing from the PS3 is the sandwich-grilling capabilities we were promised at a Sony press conference last year that took place in my head. Aside from that, the Xbox should have wireless integrated next time around and Nintendo should work on a better online interface or any other system besides the dreaded “friend code” garbage they have now. Always room for improvement, game console manufacturers. Listen to your damn followers to make a better product, please.
